Hurley, our brindle pup is whining and barking in his kennel at night and I am at a loss at what to do. Hecame home with us Friday and did well that night. However Sat night and last night cried until my wife (a big softie) let him out and put him in the bed with us. His kennel is in our bedroom and he still cries. Any suggestions? I don't want a boxer in my bed! We tried a warm hot water bottle under his bed and a wind up clock at the suggestion of a friend. Did not work. Any help would be appreciated. I can't take another night of not sleeping.

I ( along with 99% of the members here ) have had to bare the "Cries of a puppy" for the first few nights. You arent alone. Just dont give up or GIVE IN. listen to Sid and take my advice, just give it sometime as it will get better.
ps
last thing you want is your pup having control and with your wife giving in your starting off on the wrong paw.

good luck, it gets better and well worth it

Yup Ear Plugs.... THe trick is not to give in once your pup realizes whining doesnt get what he wants he will stop. But giving in and coddling while he is whinning is giving him attention which will only show him that Whining will get him what he wants.

One thing you can try is tiring him out before he goes to sleep so he falls to sleep shortly after beinging put in his crate.

Once he starts to realize that whining doesnt get him what he wants he will whine less and less every night untill he just stops protesting and realizes that its just rutine.

Good Luck and have patience

Don't give in...

Definitely do not give in! It's hard, I know...Lola was perfect in the crate when we brought her home but Dax was a whiney baby. We ignored it most the time and it was over with in about 4 days...he barks now so we moved his crate to our room and that stopped. He just likes being near us so I compromised without letting him in bed. I let him lay with me while a read or watch a little TV and then put him in his crate and he's fine. I've heard of people letting them fall asleep with you and then placing them in the crate...this wasn't something I tried so I don't know if it works. I actually wake Dax up to go to his crate. Make sure you make the crate a nice place to be. Give treats, put him in there occasionally while you watch tv and then let him out. Make sure he knows it's not a punishment or anything like that. But be persistent and consistent and it will pay off.

Good luck...

I can't take another night of not sleeping.

Weeeellll - the average amount of sleep lost to pups screaming in their crates is about a week. Well worth it really - the "easy" way out of letting the pup sleep with you isn't so easy when it means the next ten years sharing your bed with a 70lb boxer (remember the gas ;)). And you compare it to a human child, you get off pretty lightly. But if a single night is your limit, you're in for a bit of pain ;) Ear plugs are a partial solution. But you should bear in mind that the average puppy is not going to be capable of lasting all night without a potty stop (or a wet bed) until they're close to 15 weeks old...

Thanks for all the advice. Looks as though we will be investing in some ear plugs. Hurley is a very smart dog and house training does not seem to be a problem (knock on wood) as he is very good about letting you know when he needs to go. We'll just have to use some patience and plugs. Thanks again

I put a radio right next to Lilly's crate. She only cried for a few minutes and then she would be fine. That only lasted just about a week and she was going to sleep just fine.

Don't give in the first night we had Foreman dh slept beside his cage with his hand in the first half of the night then when he cried he just Im here and that was it. We moved the crate in our bedroom after that and he slept fine from that night on in his crate.
