Crate Fans?

Anyone have any experience with the little fans that can be attached to a dog crate? I'm seriously leaning towards getting a couple for Pasdar and Chloe. But before I make a trip to the pet store (and drop the $30) I was hoping someone might have some feedback on them. The plan right now is to have the crates in the garage (which gets warm, but not nearly as hot as you'd think) so I want to make sure they also have fans to keep them as cool as possible. I have a big fan I can blow on them too, but I thought the little "personal" fans would be helpful as well.

Before someone asks, the crates are going to be in the garage as a compromise. My boyfriend says that my house "smells like dog" and his house isn't going to "smell like dog." I figure having the crates in the garage will help with this problem. He has no problem with the dogs themselves being in the house, he just doesn't want the smell. (BTW, his garage has air conditioning ducts, so if it comes to that, we can air condition the garage.)

BTW, I tested the whole dogs being outside theory last night. It was early evening, still warm but not "heat of the day" hot. Chloe (my bulldog) lasted about 10 minutes before I could tell her breathing wasn't right and I had to let her back in the house. Pasdar was a different story. He ran and played and I had the hardest time getting him to come inside. So I think the plan will be to let Chloe continue to be an inside dog, while Pasdar will get some evening playtime outside. He didn't seem to miss her at all when he was out there, and she was just as happy by herself with a chew toy on the kitchen floor.

Please be careful about leaving your dogs crated in the garage if you don't have central a/c in the garage. In the middle of the day garages can get just as hot as parked cars, past 100 degrees for sure.

Boxers should not have any 'dog smell' if you clean their crates out regularly and clean them regularly (something to do with the coats and stuff).

Just ask yourself - would you be ok shut in the garage in the middle of teh day? I know ours is scorching when I come home at noon to let sam out of his crate, and we're not that far from Austin.

If you have one room dedicated to their crates it shouldn't be a big deal.

I agree with Mandi. Just be careful about putting either one of them in the garage. I'm in Houston and it's just way too hot here. I couldn't do that- it would totally freak me out. When we were in Nashville Daisy panted all the time because we didn't have air conditioning in the living room. We did have tons of fans but they aren' dogs that can handle really hot temps. I am thrilled to have central air again and so is she. I must also say that Daisy doesn't smell like dog either. If it's really strong you might want to get that checked. good luck

i would definitely recommend the crate fans. i personally own and use them and they are quite helpful when traveling. i utilize them when transporting my dogs in the suv.

take care when crating. i wouldn't recommend crating your dog in the garage, regardless of what temperature you might think it gets. i noticed that your posting from texas and know for certain that it gets quite hot there regardless of what time of day. boxers are not intended to be outdoor dogs and are happiest when they are with their families. they are protectors by nature and always want to see what is going on around them and their families. boxers are very clean dogs and do not require much bathing. they are truly a 'wash-and-wear' breed. keep in mind that they do not well in extreme heat or cold. if it's too hot or cold for you, then it's safe to say that it's too hot or cold for your boxer.

Thanks. Do they seem to give off a good amount of air? By looking at them it's hard to tell.

ETA: I just took another look at the rules and don't see the problem. I'm trying to get good information that will be of benefit to my dogs.

My thought to this is why have a dog if you don't want your house to "smell like dog". They are going to add their natural sent to the house, that is just a fact of life and owning a pet. If you keep them clean, washed and their crates cleaned out then I don't see the problem with having them inside. I have to agree with the comment "would you want to be in the garage all day with just fans blowing on you"? I know I wouldn't. Maybe you should have a discussion with your BF to see if their is another alternative to the garage, because it is still going to get very very hot. Just think of what is best for your babies.
