Could this be another MCT?

Found a black hard growth (looked like a tick) on Dakota's chest. I touched it and it broke off leaving a small red abrasion on the skin. He had a grade 1 MCT successfully removed from the top of his head last July but has continued to have bouts with hives and gastric upsets. If this spot remains ulcerated, I will have a vet check but am hoping it will heal up with some Neosporin. Any ideas?

I would personally take him in to have it checked. Especially since you've already been through one MCT. I am paranoid about ANY lump on my boy now, we just found out yesterday that his lump which was removed was indeed a MCT. Boxers & lumps don't mix!

Good luck and keep us posted :)

That actually doesn't sound like an MCT to me. My dogs have had several and they have looked different almost every time, but none have ever appeared black. What you're describing sounds like maybe a bug bite or a bump from a staph infection or something like that. However, even with that said, it's always best to have those things checked out especially in dogs with a history of mast cell tumors. Also, I'm sure you know this, but one of the major problems with MCT's is that can look like so many other kind of lumps and skin problems. Better to be safe than sorry. Good luck. It's probably nothing. I'll have my fingers crossed for you guys.

It doesn't sound like a mct since it did break off,but better to be safe than sorry-ask your vet.

My sweet Tossie had all kinds of black "things" I think mostly warts but there were a few that were like warts and then dried up and broke off like you described. The vet always told me not to worry about them. Hope it is nothing serious.

Have to wait a week.....

so said my vet as the flat red area could be the result of Dak's hive attack.....one of the hives having "leaked" plasma and formed the hard crusty black growth that broke off, irritating the skin. If the area enlarges or worsens in the next few days I am to return. Otherwise, application of "Bactoderm" 3 X day and careful observations are my instructions. Of course I am a nervous wreck....constantly turning Dak on his side and having a look-see. My vet said that it is very common for the MCTs to return in a different area especially in Boxers and as long as they are dealt with early and remain a "grade 1" the prognosis is good.

Thanks for all your good wishes and advice... will keep you informed.
