I've seen this stuff on the Animal Cops Show, but had never seen it in person. The wife and I were at a friends for a BBQ the other night. One of his neighbors was there and we got into a discussion about PitBulls. Personally I don't trust them, I've had one attack my Boxer without being provoked then come after me. Anyway my buddy's neighbor kept reassuring me that I just had bad experiences with them and that I ought to meet his male and female and their new litter of 4 week old puppies. He kept telling me how his dogs were his life. So the wife and I and my buddies fiance (who is a Vet Tech) walked over to their house. I couldn't believe what I saw. They had the female chained to a tree next to some kinda ratty looking lean-to dog house with no food or water. She looked horrible, her hair was falling out and she was eat up with fleas. The pups were just left to run free. The male was chained to another tree and kept coughing. I knew something was wrong with him, then my buddies fiance told me the coughing was probably heartworms. So I asked the guy and sure enough he said that's what it was. I couldn't believe it, then he told me the female had them too but he could not afford to have either treated. So about this time I'm about to go off on this guy for even thinking about breeding these dogs, so me and the wife decide it's time to go back to my friends. But before we leave the guy tells us he has already sold one of the puppys (at 4 weeks old.) He said the new owner took the dog a few days earlier and is bottle feeding it. I just couldn't believe it, there really are people like that out there. My buddies fiance is going to contact the ASPCA or local animal control to try to get something done about that. These puppys are going to end up in a fight pit or die before they even leave this guys house. No wonder these dogs get a bad wrap, look at the ignorant people breeding them.

Did you happen to ask the guy if these dogs were his life (as he said) why in the HELL would he be treating them so badly! I would be furious! I used to be turned off by pitbulls, but then I've determined it isn't the breed. As you said, it is the ignoramious people who breed them and treat them badly. It's not the breed--it's the owners who raise them.

Yeah, this is a shame

We have a neighbor here on the base I live on who owns a pit. That dog is possibly the second most loving dog I have ever seen in my life!!! He is taken care of really well, happy, healthy and a big sweety. When that dog approached me the first time, I thought he was going to eat me alive, but then he reassured me he wasn't any harm to me. He became buddies with Sketch. :D

Goes to show, pits aren't naturally evil, mean dogs, it is their upbringing. The guy you saw, and the condition of those pits, I too would be calling ASPCA. You are right, the likelihood of the pups and dogs ending up in a fight is probably really good, which is a crying shame.

The person who bought the puppy probably took it early to give it a better chance. It probably will survive better bottle feeding it than running loose in the backyard.

ALL those dogs need to be confiscated ASAP! I am horrified by the stupidity of some people. Tie up your dogs, use them as breeding machines, make a little $ off of them and deny them medical treatment even though they are making money! Pitbulls are a wonderful breed if the proper measures are taken, taking a 4 wk old pup home to bottle feed it is not a great idea. Pups need the ineraction with their parents up until they are 8-10 wks old! Though I do agree, the pup who is gone is lucky to have gotten out of that place. I pray something is done soon for the parents.

You know I have to agree. That pup sounds like it might have finally found love, something it would never had there.

I know people that have pitbulls and they treat them horribly. One is tied to a doghouse and has been since it was 6 weeks old, never had a toy, a chew or any love  Another is tied to cement cinder blocks to build him up, for what, yeah I know, and another has puppies and was left out in the cold so 4 of the 8 died. This is her third litter that I know of and she is barely two years old. Yeah you are right it is the ignorant people and the poor pitbull is paying the price.

i totally agree! at my cottage there was a lovely pit bull named gloria :D she was so sweet! she loved to play with my pug/russel cross and she was very gentle with her, even though lola is 1/3 her size!! so they were best friends till gloria moved away ;). i had never met a pit before that and i haven't since, but let me tell you there are plenty of other breeds that i run into all the time that are just plain vicious!! i don't know if all the jack russel owners i have ever met are just bad owners or what, but i have NEVER EVER met a nice jack russel! they ALWAYS try to bite either me or lola, OR my little brother, who is only 12. lola certainly isn't like that, even though she has jack russel in her!!

okay this is soo off topic it's not even funny. sorry! i get pretty agitated, especially with this pit bull ban going on here in ontario :(. sigh, i guess we just do what we can, eh?

The really sad thing is

Most pitbulls can NOT be adopted out or rescued especially the ones that have fought in the past. Because many people (not me included in this) Believe they can not be rehabilitated! I love the breed and have only had Nice dog's in the past! Too much in breeding to make them better in a fight ring because then they are hereditarily mean by nature at that point!

I am ready to become an advocate for them in EVERY sense of the word I wish that I could fix this problem but unfortunantley it Doesn't work that way!

This idiot should be thrown in Jail and god Forbid I EVER walk into a situation like that I may be forced to hurt someone Physically! It really breaks my heart the poor little things!

And what is worse is that most people believe that they are mean all on their own and LIKE to fight! I mean the nerve...REALLY!

Sorry this is a touchey subject for me pitbulls were the only dog That I would have considered before I got my Baby Boxer Boy! And I still hold the same love for them that I did before.

Horrifying! And how retarded is that guy for openly "showing off" his pups when they are in that condition. Clearly totally ignorant.... I hope one day he finds himself chained to a building with a life threatening, but totally preventable disease and fleabitten.... It seems to me that would be the only way he could understand what a terrible life he has given "his" dogs...How sad that this is the kind of life dogs have to live.

Keep us posted on the outcome... I hope those dogs get rescued and proper medical care...
