I Was Wondering If Dogs Can Catch Colds From Humans. My Kids And Myself Have Been Sick With Cough And Sneezing For About 5 Days...coco Has Been Coughing ( Sounds Like Something In Her Throat) And Her Nose Is Runny. Before I Take Her To The Vet...i Was Wondering If Anyone Knew If This Is Possible.

hi

I just read a book about Boxers & they said that they can not catch colds etc.. If they have a runny nose & cough it might be kennel cough or some sort of allergy. My Boxers nose runs a lot too & I am afraid it might be from a smoking household. Hope that helps.

Your boxer won't catch a human cold. He could be getting kennel cough. :(

thanks for the info...i was worried about that. what do they do for that. she seems to cough the most in the morning. i guess i am taking my time because im not crazy about coco's vet....she seems a little looney...way to hyper and really never lets me talk...i really would like to find a vet that knows a lot about boxers. thanks again.

There is not a lot that you can do for kennel cough. It like the common cold and is caused by a virus, so antibiotics don't do any good. You do have to watch for a secondary infection as it could develope into pneumonia or bronchitis. If she is coughing really badly you can give a little honey as it will help the cough. Kennel cough can take 3 weeks to run it's course.

I hope Coco is feeling better soon.

There is a new Canine virus out there right now that has some of the same symptoms as kennel cough and if left untreated they can develop pneumonia. I thinks it's called canine flu.

I don't know if this helps, but although dogs can't catch human colds, they have their own set of viruses that cause similar symptoms. Martin had gotten some short of flu when he was two years old. It was not kennel cough, but it was the equivalent of human cold or flu. He was sneezing, coughing, and had a runny nose with some short of yellowish discharge and some fever. It went away in a few days, and we only had to keep his nose wet with some baby medicine and give him a syrup. Your vet though is the best equipped to help you deal with that.
