Willow has been being an awesome little girl she is turning 1 year old tomorrow (the 22nd). However, lately she has been whining almost constantly, she used to only do it when she needed to go out and go potty. Now we are all getting very annoyed by her and don't know what to do. We play with her and her siblings, we give them all attention, we treat them all the same, but she just keeps whining and we don't know how to deal with it anymore.

Take her to the vet for a thorough check-up with bloodwork. Behavioral issues like this are often a sign that the dog isn't "feeling well" and there is some underlying health problem that has yet to be discovered. A common one for boxers is hypothyroidism, which in its earliest stages can present behavioral symptoms like this even with NO physical symptoms. So be sure to pay special attention to her thyroid levels on her bloodwork. If you'd like to know more about this topic just search the Behavioral Issues and Health Issues forums for "thyroid".

I agree with CaneyCreek, I would take her to the vet for a thorough exam and full blood work to rule out any medical issues. Seems like hyperthyroidism is very common with boxers.

I agree, ruling out medical issues is a good idea whenever any sort of behavior problem crops up. That being said, my girl is an incessant whiner as well and unfortunately it's not medical, it's just... her. Typically I just ignore it or will tell her to go lay down. I reinforce calm moments. I'll pull out a tug toy to play with when she's relaxing quietly, but I won't play with her if she whines. I feel your pain though because it drives me nuts, she's been this way since she was 6 months old and it's a little disappointing to think she'll be this way for the next 10 years.

I'd say check it out with your vet to be safe. Dobby my 3 year old Boxer used to whine so much I'd run to the bathroom for a moment of silence. The vet said many boxers whine extensively and that as he vot old he would stop. Just a few months after his third birthday it was like night and day. He only whines when he wants something or wants me to hold him. (yes he sits in my lap)

Update us with what the vet has to say.

I am going to wait to bring her to the vet. we are thinking its just her personality. Hoping she will grow out of it. Our three boxers love to sit in our laps too. So I know what you are saying there. Holding Willow whenever she starts to whine has been calming her down quite a bit.

Wow not my decision. It was the one who pays the bills decision. When I can afford a vet visit ill do it. But right now we trying different things so we don't have to spend any money figuring it out. And its working her whining has decreased dramatically. Thanks for your support.

Oh yes the whining can drive you nuts!

Raleigh whines ALL the time, our other boxers hardly ever whined but he always has, it's not medical with him either, he just does it, we ignore the whining but then he'll get louder and louder and if I go in to another room he will follow me and whine again!

In the past when he was smaller I did give in to him, bad me:)...as it drove me 1/2 crazy, I try not to laugh though as when he's sitting at the side of me on the couch and starts whining and I ignore him, he'll start making these other weird noises and pawing at me, he does get the message eventually though and will settle.

He gets a lot of exercise, enough food, water, toys, loving etc..I've come to the conclusion he's very lets say, vocal:)

Hi Willowmoon,

My puppy started doing that too around eleven months or so. She would walk around and wine, usually she just wanted attention or something else. We have taken her to the vet reguarly for shots and a skin condition she had, so I know her medical condition is fine. I've paid attention to how she is acting when she's wining and I can tell it's not a medical condition, but I agree it is always smart to rule out anything medical. I can usually tell what is going on with my pup by her demeaner and activity levels. That's how I first determine if she is trying to tell me if something is wrong or if her personality is just chaging. I will say that as she has gotten older small things like that about her have changed. Good luck and keep us posted. :)

This is TRUE. My one year old, Berlin, does the same thing. I just thought it was because she was a spoiled brat though. Two months ago she started getting shaking spells, almost like a seizure, so I took her to her vet and she got a full blood panel done. Turns out she has hypothyroidism. She is on medication now but still whines. Definitely take your dog to the vet!

P.S.-it only paid $100 for the bloodwork...this is not something expensive so please don't hold this off!
