Boxer Pal
Hi, just a quick hello to all the members here. I got my first puppy ever (or a pet in general) two weeks ago. My boxer, Boss, was a little short of 5 weeks at the time, but he was much better off at our house anyway, since the breeder (some lady with an unwanted litter) was not good for them at all.

Now Boss has learned a lot, including walking (which he couldn't do before without dragging his back behind him), running up and down the stairs, and playing games with me like fetching and coming when he's called. We are also working with him on potty training and nipping/biting and seem to be making progress so far.

He is adorable and a ton of fun :D . I'd appreciate any advice and am doing lots of browsing and searching, since info here is phenomenal.

Are there any Connecticut (Fairfield Country), New York (Westchester) owners out there that would want their pets to be Boss's playmates? I'd love for him to socialize with other boxers.

Thanks!

Completely Boxer Crazy
Welcome to BW. It is great that you are already thinking about socializing your puppy, it is extremely critical since you got him so early. Right now he is learning to be a dog. If you have any friends with dogs that you know are healthy and have all of their shots let your pup meet them (providing they like other dogs). Try to make every experience your pup has, be a good one. There are many good boxer books out there. I do recommend you pick one up. It will help you understand the mind of your pup a little better.

Good luck and have fun.

Most dogs go through a biting phase. Some of it is teething, some is play, some is learning the rules, or trying to establish their own rules.

Should Boss get aggressive with his biting, don't shout or try to restrain him. It will only serve to further excite him. The best action is to abandon him for a while, ten to fifteen minutes. Just go where he can't follow. Baby gates are wonderful for containing dogs in one area of the house.

You can step over a gate leaving Boss behind. You don't have to go out of his sight, just out of his presence. It won't take long for him to realize that biting results in being left behind. Boxers don't like that.

Do a search on bite inhibition. Boss should learn to use his mouth in play. Dogs have only their paws and mouths to use, and their paws aren't particularly good at holding things since they need them to walk.

Good luck with Boss. Let us know how he's progressing.
