We have a problem with Jax coming when he is called when there is outside interferance (scuse the lousy spelling, please). We live in the country, and sometimes other dogs make the journey up our road. Allthough Jax is very seldom loose in the yard, and always with supervision, he will confront the other dogs if he possibly can. We have had to contact a professional for help with this for rear he will run off and get hurt or mistaken for a Pitt Bull. Just wondering if there are others who's pal will be good as gold until you really need them to mind.

This is very normal behavior. When your dog is 100 percent reliable without distractions, you then gradually add distractions. Shorten the distance and use extra yummy treats as rewards. Gradually increase the distractions and increase the distance bit by bit until he comes no matter what. It would be a good idea to start off using a long leash. If he doesn't come immediately, turn and run in the opposite direction, he will invariably follow. Lots of praise when he catches up to you.

Good luck

Barrons' trainer suggested that I start with a 50 foot leash, or clothesline and do not tug the line for a correction unless necessary. The line drags on the ground. Eventually cut the rope to 25 foot, 12 foot, 6 foot, and 1 foot intervals attached to the dog's collar. If your dog takes off and does not listen, go back to the 50 foot line and proceed slower. Do this training in different places and with as many different distractions as possible. And....as always........reward, reward, reward. Lots of praise (and treats)!

Thanks for the help! We are trying very hard here. Wish the neighbors did not believe in letting their bunch (about 10 dogs and 20 cats) run wild! Poor Jax gets so excited when he sees their dog(s) actually go inside his pen and drink his water! Have tried discussing this with them but all I get back is "We moved to the country so we would not have to put up with all those rules"
Then, THEN!!!! they tell me that not all of these animals have shots!!! Livid here!

Even though you live in the "country" most cities have laws regarding letting animals run off leash and licencing. I wouldn't be too happy about that especially the fact that the animals aren't up to date with shots. Living in the country also increases exposure to diseases from wild animals.

Amber, it's a nightmare! These dogs are 99% ignored, and the cats are everywhere driving my Jax to distraction! I have been doing some research on licensing (sp) and I think I found something. I think the county might require them to have a kennel license with that many animals. I am calling right after the holidays if not before. This is insane here. These dogs are an incident waiting to happen. Other than that we have no recourse as there are no laws against the dogs running loose, the sherriff tells me. he told me to shoot them. I can't do that but will be very vocal every time I have to make them leave my dog's private area

Come to Oklahoma and you'll believe it. They treat animals so poorly here and have very few laws to protect them. They are basically livestock in Okla. Very, very sad. Actually, livestock have more rights than dogs. If a dog is caught near livestock (cows, horses, etc.) then the owner of the livestock has complete freedom to shoot and kill that dog, no questions asked. And that's in the CITY. Folks who live in more rural areas have fewer controls and laws of protection.

Anyway, we're gonna see how well Jax can learn that no matter how many dogs and cats are running around, he can still have a great life, a safe life and enjoying being with his family MORE than chasing wild dogs and cats. Time, patience and some hard work will definitely help.

Wow, I really feel for you. It must be very frustrating. Good for you for being persistant though. Where I live it is technically illegal to let your dog off leash anywhere in the city except designated off leash areas. We have lots of hiking areas with few people where we take Charlie to run so she can burn off her never ending energy. We even have signs everywhere that you can be fined up to $2000 for not picking up after your dog, although I've never heard of anyone being charged. It's nice to know that if you live close to inconsiderate people such as your neighbours there are laws to protect yourself.

wow!

We just had our very first lesson. I learned so much! I believe there is hope. (but I'm still making them either get a kennel license or pay the price for the horrible conditions their animals live under)
