I have another thing for you to think about--what about after college? I know that as a student I had tons more free time than I did after I graduated, and of course you will still have your dog then. You said that you're a nursing student, so you probably have a good idea of what your job will be like after you're out of school, but I just thought I'd mention it as something to consider.
My boyfriend in college (now my fiance) and I really really wanted a dog from when we were in school until we got our puppy when we moved to NC together a YEAR after we graduated. We didn't want to make the committment until we were both living in the same place and we were sure our schedules would leave us plenty of time for our little guy. It was so hard to wait that long, but it was so worth it.
