Hi everyone,

Riley is 8 months old now so she has not yet experienced a winter. I know that they are not supposed to like cold weather but was wondering how other people's boxers have done in the winter? I live in Northern VA so it does get cold (though not as extreme as some places further north)...gets down into the 20-30s. Do the babies still like to go outside and play? Riley goes to the dog park almost everyday and I was wondering if she will still like to go then? If yours don't like the cold weather, how do they release their energy? I am just picturing major indoor boxer burn if she decides she doesn't like the cold!!!! I live in an apartment so that would be CRAZY! =)

Thanks for your input!
Erica

Our winters here (Pacific Northwest) are nowhere NEAR what your's must be like. Every Boxer I've had however, loves to play in the snow - they're like a kid in a candy store :) We have always let our dogs play in the snow for a while, but don't leave them out for too long. Those short coats just don't insulate very well. I know that you can buy "coats" and "booties" for dogs, so you might look into that

Wisconsin Winters

We live in Wisconsin so we know about winter. My boy loves the snow. He is an absolute nut running and jumping in it. Favorite game for Rocky and DH is fetch the snowball. One day Rocky will figure out it cannot be done.

Boxers actually do better in cold than on the really hot summer days. We have to be careful how long we stay at the dog park in summer, but not so much in the winter. I get cold and want to go home before he does.

brrrr

It gets down to -30 C quite regularly through our winter. Ozzy hated the cold. He would go out to do his business and punch the kitchen door frantically if you didn't let him in quickly enough. Some days he'd come in the house crying because his feet were SOOO cold. Needless to say, MAJOR boxer burn through out the house - over the couch, onto my lap, off the back of my chair,.... I always felt sorry for him when the weather was cold and let him burn in the house. Just moved everything way out of the way!! (=

My girl loves the cold, snow, ice, sleet, rain etc....I honestly believe that she was an outside dog in a previous life. I have to coax her inside on cold days as I start shivering and need heat way before she does. The snow boxer burns are very fun to watch. She has a fleece coat for walks in the winter but for just outside romping and snowball chasing she goes it a la' naked!

As long as I am out in it with her ... Mattie doesn't mind any kind of weather. However, if I stand under the awning.. she is like " I don't think so... we are in this together" LOL I am getting mattie a fleece come winter time and I would suggest the same.

We live in Ohio where it does snow and get pretty cold. Gideon loves the snow. Last winter when he was only a couple of months old...we just put him in a sweater and he still wanted to go for walks in the snow. At first, we had to coax him outside to even potty...but soon he wanted to go play and chase snowballs and jump. He wears a sweater still because I feel that the short hair needs another layer--he loves the sweater and can play outside longer now!
