We recently got out puppy (about a week ago) and on her first visit to the vet they told us she has coccidia (worms). She got put on a 10 day medication and seems to be doing much better now. Our main concern is one of my friends told me that if a dog has worms in their stool then they probably have heart worms....is this true? I've never heard of that before. We gave her heartworm prevention on july 1st and we have another vet appointment in about a week so I will get a chance to know for sure but I was just wondering if my friend is right. Thankss!!!

Our baby girl had coccidia when we brought her home too. She was on Albon for 14 days and hasn't had any issues with it since. And no heartworms either :) If your puppy is still a baby it's VERY unlikely she's had time to catch heartworms yet. Just make sure that if you keep her on a preventative during any times of year that there's a risk where you live. Good luck with your new baby!

Great!! we feel much better now. We didn't think they were related in any way but its good to hear from other sources to confirm it. Thanks a bunch!!

no that is not true coccidia is not an actual worm, it is a protazo or a type of parasite. heartworm does not come out in the feces, it is in the lungs and takes several months to mature into actual worms, worms in stool would indicate intestinal parasites most commonly rounds worms, but can also be tapeworm, whip worm or hook worm
