Clotting Defect?

My 5 1/2 mnth old baby girl was spayed this morning and I got a call from the vet this afternoon that the external wound is oozing blood that they have not been able to stop. He also said that when they drew blood, normally they would just apply pressure for about 20 seconds until it stopped bleeding, but with her they had to wrap the spot they drew from. She is having her blood sample sent to a lab to check for Hemophylia or some kind of clotting defect. We will get the results tomorrow.

They are keeping her for the night, but yet no one is going to be there to monitor her.

My concern is...if she is bleeding from the external wound, how do they know that she is not bleeding internally?

Has anyone else had this problem with any of their babies? Is it serious? I'm a little worried... :(

I have heard of this problem before. Usually they do a blood test prior to a spay to indicate if there will be any problems. I do not recommend allowing her to stay there overnight and had this arguement with my vet one time. If they are not going to be there to monitor her, bring her home. Atleast you will be there and can get her to an emergency vet if need be. Good luck and please keep us posted. I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers.

It's probably too late now, but like Aimee, I would want to have her at home to keep an eye on her. I wouldn't want her to be at the vets, if there wasn't going to be anyone there.

She probably has von Willebrands disease, which is a blood clotting disorder. The link below will give you more information.

Thank you!

Thanks for the information Aimee and Jan. I'll find out more this morning when I go to pick her up and see the vet. I'll keep you posted. Keep your fingers crossed that it is nothing too serious!
