Boxer Pal
Hello Folks,

Has anybody tried clicker training with their Boxer? -(with or without the help of a professional trainer). If so, was it a success?
I'm trying to decide on the best method of "basic" obedience training my 2 year old and there seems to be so many options. Also, is it necessary to go to a professional trainer to successfully clicker train your dog?

Thanks!

We clicker train our Boxers :) I'd never train any other way these days. It has been quite successful, our dogs have a few titles. It would probably be easier if you could go to an experienced trainer but there is no reason you can not try it yourself - at the very worst all you will end up with is a naughty, possibly chubby dog (if you are using food rewards).

This site has a listing of people who run clicker classes and you might find someone near you: http://www.travelvan.net/cgi-bin/marge/mainpage.pl

This previous thread might be useful if you would like to start yourself without going to class: http://www.boxerworld.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=13511

Super Boxer
I have the Clicker Magic Video, and it's money well spent. If you can find a professional trainer that has Clicker classes, I would reccomend that as well, because it is sometimes nice to have that one on one, and also learn from the mistakes made in a group.

What I think you'd like about clicker training, is that there is no battle of wills between you and your puppy, all you need is some patience, and some treats!;)

When I first started to train Jakob, I was taught the whole command/correct/praise routene, and it was nothing but a struggle. (If I knew then what I know now.........)Switching over to Conditioning improved not only his behavior, but our relationship as well.

Good luck with the training! You might get hooked and become one of the brave souls that enjoys Obedience and other fun dog sports!

Completely Boxer Crazy
We took Megan to classes that taught with the clicker. It is safe to say everyone enjoyed it. Megan learned quick and when we take the clicker out she suddenly started to pay attention. It was fun for her and that made it easy for us and fun for us. I would highly recommend clicker training for anyone with or without the professional classes.

Boxer Buddy
I think the clicker is great Macey picked up all basic obedience very quick.
Such as sit, down, paw, up and crawl all within 1 week of training it was 1 command a night for 15 minutes.
I do recommend that you do go to classes too as some dogs ignor the clicker after a while including mine for some commands such as "come here" it is a good buy though IMHO.
