Cleaning Kongs

I have 3 of the Rubber Kong Toys and I tried mixing some kibble and peanut butter and stuffing the Kongs. He was interested in them for like 5 minutes and basically I ended up with Kongs still with food in them. I tried rinsing them out, soaking them, and sticking them in the dishwasher and still get food remnants.

How do you clean you Kongs?

The dishwashwer works fine for me, it might depend on the cycle you use, I usually use the 50 degree wash as I find that the quick wash only works well on glasses and cups, you may be able to get a bottle brush at a hardware store ,this should do the job.

I use an old baby bottle brush....I try to get as much out of the kong as I can, then soak it in hot water for a bit, then use the bottle brush, then the dishwasher. Works like a charm! :)

I just use dish soap and an old toothbrush. Sometimes soaking in hot water overnight. I wasn't sure if they were dishwasher safe so that's what I came up with. I did see at a dog show once a kong brush specifically designed to clean them, but haven't seen one since, guess I should have bought it when I saw it.

I'll have to try the toothbrush first, Finding a bottle cleaning brush that small has not been the easiest task so far.

Thanks for the tips.

I got a brush used to clean birdfeeders. It seems the perfect width plus it is a little longer, so it seems a good fit. I will rinse with hot water and then scrub. Soak when I need to. I also run them thru the dishwasher on the sanitize cycle if they sat too long without cleaning.

Same thing here. You can buy special "kong cleaning brush", but a cheap baby bottle brush works just as well. :)

Thank you for asking this question. I have four stinky Kong's that need to be cleaned desperately!

Kongs are indestructible! They are fine to put in the dishwasher (I would use a normal cycle though probably not high heat).... I

I've never put anything "wet" in my kong as a treat. I use duck filet strips (it's just 100% dried duck strips, looks like jerky), or I will use chicken ones (whichever I have) - they wedge in nicely usually keeps him busy for anywhere from 5-30min depending on how good it's stuck in there and they cost A LOT less than kong treats made for kong. Best of all they are clean.

I thought of buying the kong treat in a can - you squeeze it into the kong (same idea as peanut butter I think), but I worried that it would make a mess of my house! Dozer always hold the kong up high in his mouth and then throws it to the floor - I could imagine it now - splatters of gooey dog treat splattered on everything!

I put peanut butter in mine and then put in the freezer for awhile, nice cold treat, and takes her longer to lick out = more quiet time!! Also doesn't make a mess. My girl just lays on the floor licking at it for hours so I don't have to worry about the tossing it around part.
