i noticed Elli had a drop of blood in her urine 2 weeks back so i took her to the vet that day. When we got to vet i was telling her what was going on and the vet said "well we need to get a urine sample" so we waited till she went pee and come to find out she has "rod bacteria" in her urine. so the vet told me she had a UTI and put her on "clavamox" which is the same antibiotics that she was on "to help her skin". i found it odd that she put her on the same antibiotics 2 times in a row for 2 different things. But anyways she finished her "clavamox" about 2 days ago BUT today when i was walking her i noticed she had blood in her urine AGAIN!!! Why was she put on "clavamox" for skin AND a UTI??? Is that normal? Sometimes it feels like this Vet is just trying to get the most money out of me that she can.

Sounds like you'd feel more confident with another vet. I would get a second opinion if there is still blood after a full course of antibiotics...Clavamoxx is used for lots of bacterial problems.

Doubt the vet is ripping you off but i know sometimes it can feel that way!

clamamox or augmentin as i know it, is a frequently used antibiotic for UTIs, skin infections etc. it will work for both problems.

Every time the vet determined a UTI he sent the urine out to be cultured to make sure the antibiotic he would prescribe actually would attact the particular strain of bacteria first. We used clavomax too. How long was she on it. Typically they go with 2 weeks but KOKO always needed to be on it longer 3-4 weeks to clear up the infection. Sounds like yours was not on it long enough to clear up the infection. Go back to the vet ASAP. Since she was off it for two days she may have to start an entire new course again from the start. That is just the way antibiotics work. If you break the cycle you basically have to start all over from the beginning again.

Make sure to add plain yogurt (2 Tablespoons) to her diet about 2 hours after you give the antibiotics to help keep her intestinal system in balance and for at least 2 weeks after you finish them. Also I would suggest giving her cranberry capsules (healthfood store) twice a day to help keep her intestinal system at an acidic PH level - which helps to prevent ( not cure) future UTI's.

No, not when she is on antibiotics. Typically I give more than the usual 1 tbls per day because the drugs are so aggressive. Make sure you give it about 2 hrs after the antibiotics ( if you start them up again) or the antibiotics will just kill the healthy bacteria in the yogurt that you are striving for. The healthy bacteria in the yogurt is used to replace the necessary healthy bacteria in the intestines that the antibiotics are killing (along with the bad bacteria of the infection). The drugs do not discriminate between bacterias. A healthy intestines requires a balance between healthy bacteria and yeast. Each keeps the other in balance.

If she still has blood take her back and get more antibiotics.
