Circulatory Collapse, possibly heart problems or spleen tumor

On Monday morning, we found Bossk lying at the foot of the stairs in shock. He couldn't get up and he appeared glassy eyed. I rushed him to our vet's office. His body temperature was low and his gums were white. It was 93.5. They started warm fluids and held him overnight.

He is now at home and improved, however his diagnosis is unknown. They did bloodwork on him, x-rays and an EKG.

At this time it has been determined his problem could be one of three things: toxin exposure(which is unlikely), heart arrhythmia or it was an internal hemorrhage, specifically a hematoma on his spleen. Unfortunately, I'm afraid it may be his spleen.

His white blood cells were also elevated so he was sent home with medication to treat infection.

We will go to Birmingham on Thursday for an ultrasound of his spleen to determine if there is a mass. Our vet doesn't have this equipment and although I'd like to get it done tomorrow, they only do ultrasound on Thursdays. At that time they may also evaluate his heart as well.

Right now, he is acting normally, although I can tell he's tired. But he's happy to be home. Hopefully, with this ultrasound we can find out what's going on with him. I'm hoping for the best, but expecting the worst.

My boston terrier died in March of a ruptured spleen tumor. He acted a little funny in the morning, but seemed fine by the afternoon and when I came home in the evening he started to die. I took him to the emergency clinic and they did an ultrasound and saw that it was his spleen. Those tumors come up really quick. I had Kermit x-rayed and blood tested 6 months prior and 6 months prior to that he also had x-rays, blood tests, biopsies, and special cancer blood tests. I would think that if your dogs spleen had ruptured it would have become critical by now. If I were you I would call some emergency clinics and see if they have ultrasound machines, most do. It would be more expensive, but it would give you peace of mind. Kermit was to far gone to have the surgery, he was almost dead by the time they brought him back to me. Hope your dog is okay

How old is your dog?? I hope its not but here's our personal experience with a splenic tumor..

Our first boxer Buster died from a splenic tumor and before he did he had two or three similar episodes, its where the tumor is bleeding. Our vet was easily able to tell from the x-ray I'm suprised yours isn't unless its still relatively small or something. They gave our buster 3 months to live, we took him home and spoiled him as we both felt the alternative might not give him much more or a great quality of life and when the time came we put him down.. He was a wonderful dog and the reason we love boxers so much, such a great dog. He lived 12 years and 3 months and forever in our hearts.

Debbie Magon: Hemangiosarcoma is a cancer of blood vessels involving liver, spleen or skin. It is also genetically transmittable. Worth knowing if you purchased another dog from that breeder.
