christmas tree

i know that christmas is still far away, but this thought just popped in my head. what do you guys do to keep your boxers from tearing apart your tree and ornaments and the presents underneath? our pups will only be a few months old, so i thought of putting a gate around it.

Im only gettin over this years and your lookin to next years, ther should be a law against that.ha ha

noseriously we didnt have any problems once the tree went up bonny just seemed to accept that it was part of the house.

When putting up and taking down she did run off with the balls but that was it.

Actually, you do need to be careful of your dogs around Christmas trees. If you put the tree in water, be aware that it will be toxic to your dog (so don't let them drink it) and any ornaments consumed (especially glass ones) can cause big problems. If you're not confident that your dog will leave things alone, then gating the tree off (or just not having one) is safest.

Mya was 5 months old at Christmas last year and I was worried about it. What I did was when I was putting it up (artifical tree) is let her sniff every branch and ornanment before it went on the tree. I didn't put any ornaments down low where she could get them and when she did try to bit the tree I just calmly told her "no" and she did great. Now...the presents...I didn't put any under the tree. The worst part of the whole thing was the poor tree skirt. I was always finding it dragged into the middle of the room and full of slobber. We will have to work on that one this year!

I have a "fake" tree because of allergies. My girls investigated it at first - then if they got too close - I would take out the spray bottle (quickest way to distract my girls - they love to try to catch the stream of water in their mouths). I did have to crate them at night and when I left for fear of my girls getting "curious" when I wasn't there.

TIP: Don't put any presents under it until christmas eve and crate your dogs - I found out (after getting out of the shower) - THEY LIKE TO OPEN PRESENTS TOO. You could end up with quite a mess and/or chewed up presents. I was fortunate to catch them before they ate the stuff - but had to replace stuff that other people had bought our kids and sent up thru the mail.

ALSO, don't forget presents for them... Anything that SQUEAKS and Greenies are my girls favorites.

I have a fake tree as well. I guess I am lucky because Zeke never is interested in the tree or the presents. I always have a lot of toys for him around so he has plenty to keep him busy.

I will let you know when I put up the tree mattie never really bothered with the tree but I got samson jan 1, 05 so we will see what happens.

Actually - we OWN a x-mas tree farm, so Morgan has been around xmas trees since she was 2 months old.
She was born Oct. 5 of last year so she is 7 months old.
We did have a real tree (obviously! - Although by the time we're done selling I usually say "forget the tree this year!" But always end up putting one up!)
We actaully did not put any ornaments on the bottom of the tree - OR lights. You don't want your baby biting on the lights - and being an electrician, my husband reminded me of that!
Also make sure that the plugs are WAY inaccessible to your baby.
I would recommend a gate especially if you do not crate your dog when you leave.
Our furbaby is crated when we are gone - not only for her safety, but for my sanity!
I think that if you take the necessary precautions, it shouldn't be a problem.
But - definitely make sure that she is not allergic ahead of time.
Maybe go to a local farm and ask to cut off a branch on the bottom for her to sniff to see if there's a reaction.
And don't forget to keep that tree watered continuously and don't let it ever run out! A non-watered tree is a major fire hazard!

The first couple of years our skin baby (now almost 6 yrs) was scooting around and pulling up on things, and our previous boxer was a nosy little baby too, so we had to do some things differently. We got a fake tree (still cute) and put it on a larger end table, it looked really nice still and the "kids" could not reach anything. So... if you have a table or something to put the tree on (our tree was maybe 4 1/2 ft tall) you could try that and not have to worry so much about it getting destroyed!! Now you have got me thinking about Christmas already!!
