Harness

Luka used to pull something terrible. After a few months of the "stop walking when they pull" method and not getting anywhere, I got him just a regular nylon harness. He can't pull anymore- actually, when he does, he does this funny hopping thing, because it shifts where the tention is. But it is rare when he pulls now.
I can't tell you how much this has changed our lives. Now, we go on walks and it's great. I also have more control of him, able to shift him away from leaves/ wrappers he wants to eat and stop him from jumping on people he wants to meet or dogs he wants to bark at.
I chose against the gental leader or the like beacuse I felt they looked too much like muzzels and didn't want people to fear Luka.

Same here. Cisco does much better with a harness. We are in training class and after every class with the "stop when they pull" I just leave frustrated. I have a bad knee and it hurts it to lock my legs to stop him. Plus, he just waits till I start going again and then we are back to the pulling. My trainer wants me to use the gentle leader on him, but as someone else mentioned, I do not want others to think it is a muzzle. The trainer brought his pitbull into class one day and one of the girls sitting next to me made a comment that that dog must be mean b/c it was wearing a muzzle.
He does much better on a harness.

front clasp harness for pullers

Another excellent option to manage a dogs pulling is a front clasp harness. These are reletively new. There's the sensation harness, the premiere easy walk harness and one by Wayne Hightower. Because the leash is attached in the front of these harnesses, if the dog tries to pull, he/she is gently turned back to the owner. It works using leverage, not pain. Very gentle. Easily excepted by most dogs. It's a great option. Many of my students have tried them and love them.

choke/check chains

Hey there...
I don't really agree with choke/check chains as they only work with some breeds and that definately doesn't include the boxer. Boxers are very lively and do more harm than good when walked with a choke collar. I've trained both my boxers with the "easy walk" its like a harness...and it really does make walking effortless relaxed and FUN! The easy walk is slightly differnt to other harnesses and in my opinion its better. Hope this helps...
