Chocolate or not chocolate?

I was told that chocolate is bad for boxers! Is this a myth or the reality? Does it also applies to other breeds?

Here in Switzerland, chocolate is everywhere and, if we're not vigilant, Theo would surely find a way to find some:)

Chocolate is bad for any dog AND cats. Chocolate contains theobromine and dogs cannot metabolize this properly. IN large amounts, it will build up to a toxic amount and could cause cardiac arrest.

lol I was laughing at that coincidence when i was writing it out lol.

Chocolate is among many things dogs cannot have; grapes, onions, macadamia nuts to name a few (some speculation about the grapes though it has been linked to kidney failure). If you do an onlin search, or a search in the forums, youll find a lot more things potentially harmful to your pup :)

Shadow was a choco-holic! We were lucky that it never hurt him, as he went through our company's suitcase and found a full-package of hershey candy bars.

Over the years, he got chocolate here and there (by accident) and thankfully it didn't hurt him.

I never knew that grapes were bad for dogs before I found this board! Another thing that Shadow loved and consumed quite a bit.

It's funny, Drake is so aware if Chocolate is anywhere in the kitchen. He actually sniffs it out. I make sure he doesn't get it, but he really goes for it:)

I was reading a Christmas Warning at the vets tonight, and The worst Christmas mistake is owners giving dogs Chocolate!

They said it can cause vomiting and diarrhea to panting, excessive thirst and urination, hyperactivity, abnormal heart rhythm, tremors, seizures and even death in severe cases.

I would not give Elvis chocolate unless it is specially for dogs!
