We went on a camping trip for the weekend and had a wonderful time. However on our way back from the river fishing Abigail was sleeping in the back seat, I turned around, she had bumps on her from head to toe. He face was so swollen her eyes were almost shut. She feet up to her ankles had knots on them, her stomach had whelps, he face was so sad whelps all over even her lips swollen you could feel the knots. It scared us to death.

I had been told I could give her Children's benadryl to help with her snoring ..but an allergic reaction? Human take it soooo... We were two hours from home and our regular vet closed. I gave her a baby dose of benadryl and within 30 minutes the swelling had gone down a bunch. We were't sure at the time if we were fixing to be searching for the nearest emergency vet center but all ended well. I had to take Abigail to her regular vet Tuesday for her check up & I questioned him about it. She had picked up a fishhead and had it in her mouth a few secounds when I saw it. I didn't know if she was having a reaction to that or what. Her Dr. felt that she had gotten bitten by something to cause this type of a reaction. It was really scarey, I told him I had given her benadryl and he said you could give her (she's 15weeks) a childs dosage with no problems even if you gave her a little to much it would not hurt her only make her sleepy.

I just wanted to share this in the event someone else had the same type reaction.. Benadryl worked wonderful..

If I were you, I'd keep a bottle of liquid children's benadryl no dye formula on hand. My boxers will develop bumps on their skin once in a while and a dose of benadryl clears it up. We also experience runny noses and drainage when the allergens get very bad in spring time. My vet gave me the dosage, so check with her for your boxers weight and age, but it will come in handy.

My Caesar is allergic to everything (food allergies, seasonal allergies and anything that bites him causes issues) I keep benedryl everywhere (my purse, my car, hubby's truck, in-laws house, etc.) I know your pup is young for this but keep in mind for as she ages--rule of thumb is regular benedryl allergy 25 mg. size can be given, one tablet for every 25 pounds.

Good luck!

It's was really scary being away from home & vet, not knowing what to do for your baby... I was really afraid with her swelling so much that it might effect her breathing but it never did... not sure if it was because we got the benadryl down her as fast as we did.. she's doing fine now... 15 pds and weighing 19.5 pds...

i would just like to add that we also give zoeigh benedryl. She too is allergic to everything!!!! I feel so bad when we go on walks and she can hardly breathe. My vet said that almost ALL of the boxers he takes care of are on benedryl. Kind of funny if you think about it.

We used to have a boxer named Rusty. One day, he was going after a soccer ball that was stuck in a corner. Suddenly he started running - shaking his head and his whole body. I saw all of these little black things on him - Wasps. He had disturbed a nest that we knew nothing about. Without even thinking, I threw myself on him and starting batting them off. Luckily, I didn't get stung at all. The poor babies face swelled up like a Pumpkin. I called my Vet and she said I could give him just straight Benedryl (the one ingredient kind) and to just watch and make sure that his breathing was okay. It took a little while for the swelling to go down, but within a couple of hours he was good as new (although very sleepy :) )

benedryl tonite (vent)

Hi guys,

so after a long day, i decided to take a quick nap. i woke up and rushed to the grocery store to pick up dinner ingredients. anyways, i come home and of course when i open the door, my 2 babies are kidneybeaning like crazy. i took a moment to acknowledge them, then moved to the kitchen to put down groceries. My little Nikki comes running over and it was then that i noticed her face was soooo swollen! not her entire face, but just her left check. she looked like she was holding a golfball between her cheeks and gums. as i frantically searched for our benedryl, i asked BF, id he had noticed, he said no, not til now, "but she was sleeping on some ants.." What the hell?! i was fuming! why didn't you move her?!!! he didn't reply, too busy "studying". arghhh, and of course he doesn't help look for the benedryl, and of course i don't find it. so, i had to run back to the store to pick some up. my poor baby looks sooo swollen. i only gave her the children's dose, even though she is pretty close to being able to take 2 pills. hopefully the swelling goes down, she has a few bumps on her chest too. i'm watching her closely, and if it doesn't go down by tomorrow morn, its off to the vet for us. man, its been a really long weekend... i've been back and forth from Orange County everyday from wed-sunday, and i've got to be back in my office tom. morn at 9 (if the swelling goes down). anyways, send us those wonderful BW vibes. thanks for listening.

We're there, too

Barney has shown those allergy bumps on more than a couple occasions. The first time, like all here, we panicked. Luckily our vet is two blocks from the office. His advice was to utilize the benadryl (adult tabs) as needed for such problems.

As with you, it is now a staple in our medical bag...both the human first aid kit AND the pet first aid kit.
