We are bringing our precious baby girl home on Friday. She is 8 weeks old and we plan to feed her Chicken Soup, but my question is this...some have mentioned that you shouldn't necessarily feed "puppy" food since it tends to enhance fast growth. If this is the case, would I feed the adult formula? This brand doesn't specift "all stages" so I just wanted to make sure adult would be okay for an 8 week old pup.

Thanks,
Jen

Yes, adult food should be just fine for an 8 week old puppy. And it will help to avoid potential problems related to over-nutrition.

The feeding guidelines on the packet might be a little bit out though (well, it's only ever a general guide that needs to be adjusted to suit the individual), so for a puppy you might find that you need to feed quite a bit more than the recomended amount that equates to her weight. As an alternative general guide, you could feed her approximately the amount of adult food that is suggested for the puppy formula, and adjust upward or downward as required.

Thanks for your response. I was wondering how to determine approx. how much food to feed if I plan to mix alittle wet with the kibble.

Thanks!

Depends how much wet food (canned?) you're adding. If it's just a spoonful or so, I think most people just add that as an extra.

But no matter how you feed, it is a matter of choosing a 'starting' point, and then adjusting the amount upward or downward according to your individual puppy's needs. If she starts to look slighly chubby, you need to cut things back (remember thin is better than fat ;)). And if she's looking overly ribby, you need to up the food intake a bit.

I'm feeding Chicken Soup Puppy formula for Jada right now. I figured I would go through one 35lb bag and then go to Adult. So She'll be probably almost 5 months old when i switch her. Jozie is on the Adult now and doing great.

After reading the forum here, we feed Duke the adult chicken soup. He started on it at 8 weeks. Growing good so far!

We decided to feed Maggie the Nutro Ultra puppy food until she's a year old. We tried Chicken Soup & she hated it =( I've heard some people say that it's OK to feed adult food, but in our case Maggie does better with the puppy formulation =)
