I'm about three weeks from picking up my puppy. I have decided to feed him chicken soup for the puppy lovers soul. Now, since I've been on here I've heard that it might not be the best idea to feed my puppy "puppy food" due to the higher protein. This will be my first boxer puppy and I want to do everything I can to ensure that he is getting every kind of nutrition he needs. So I guess my question is, should I give him the puppy version, or should I give him the regular chicken soup for the dog lovers soul? If anyone thinks I should try anything else I'm very open to ideas. thankyou very much.

Chicken Soup is a very good choice :) And that goes for either the puppy or the adult formulas.

The advice we give on this site isn't that anything with "puppy" on the label should be avoided. Rather, it is that you need to check and make sure that you don't choose a puppy food that is overloaded. Thing is, excessive amounts of protein, calcium and overall calories can cause growth problems in pups - and some of those can be very serious. But not every puppy food out there is overloaded. The ones that are are usually the low end foods that load their formulas up with cheap plant proteins (which aren't great nutrition anyway). But the better foods don't normally load their foods up like that, and a puppy food around the 22-26% protein mark is generally just fine. And if in doubt, go with a good quality adult or all-life-stages formula instead.

In the particular case of chicken soup, it really doesn't matter which formula you choose. The sole difference between the adult and puppy formulas, aside from the feeding directions on the packet, is that the puppy one contains slightly more chicken fat. That's it (and how things should be too ;)).

thankyou so much. Also, when do you think I should switch him over to the adult formula? I will be picking him up at 8 weeks of age. thankyou

Anytime from about 4-6 months onward :) The greatest growth spurts are over by then (and remember, the only difference between the puppy and adult formulas of this food is in the fat content).

Most people switch somewhere between 4-6 months. A small minority hang on with the puppy food till a year old.

i switched mine from the puppy formula to the adult because like stated
there's not that much difference, and i didn't think mine needed the extra fat.so both of my babies are on the adult and look really good.and with chicken soup, puppy and adult, the pieces are the same size.

I have had Bailey on this for a week now. I am going to change. Ever since she has been on it when she poops she turns around and eats it which really grosses me out. She never did this on any other food. Now I am back to the food search.

Chicken Soup Great

We had a lot of problems with skin allergies when Sadie was a puppy. We switched to Chicken Soup and the problems were reduced to a minimum. I think that it was partially the food and the other part just her growing up.

The puppy kibble is about 1/2 the size of the adult Chicken Soup... Roxy eats much better now that we put her on the CS puppy. (I don't think she chews her food... Just lick, gulp, lick, gulp!)
She is 12 weeks old now and everyone always comments on how soft she is! I tell them all that it's the great food she's eating!!! Chicken Soup is great!!! And she loves it!
I also put a spoon full of yogurt on her food and she's not as stinky as when we first got her! Thank Goodness! :)

(I just switched my cat to Chicken Soup for the Cat Lovers Soul too and in 1 week he is the softest kitty I've ever pet! He's not even 100% switched over yet!)
