HI all,
Recently I noticed that Champ has a couple of spots on him where the fur is very fine. I can see his skin. This is on his right side, and one more on his front leg. It isn't like his belly, where the fur just gets finer and finer, it's like a patch. It's noticeable enough - guests have noticed it. He doesn't seem to be scratching there excessively or anything. HIs skin looks pretty normal underneath. What could the reasoning for this be? He had mange when he was a puppy, if that's a clue at all.

hi
just wanted to let you know that my 71/2 month old has the same thing it started as a thinning of hair on her hind, i took her to the vet and it is mange - but only a moderate form of it, she has to have injections for 4 - 12 weeks.

she has had 2 injections already and she seems to be much happier, the hair is even starting to grow back.

it has something to do with the immune system being suppressed - i think the reason Tiny got mange was because she came into heat for the first time and must be a bit stressful.
check with your vet is the best thing

I believe thinning hair can be a sign of hypothyroid. I know my parents female had some thinning hair and the vet knew just by looking at her that she had hypothyroidism. Not sure how his weight is, but I think weight gain is another symptom, I know their girl was gaining weight as well. Just a thought, it could be, it could not be.

oh, that's scary. Champ has put on a bit of weight for no apparent reason. Everyone around here keeps saying he's gotten fat and calling him chunky butt. :(
Do you know anything else about this condition?
I'm going to make a vet appointment. thanks for the info.

Look up seasonal alopecia and check out some pics of what that looks like. I don't think it sounds like seasonal alopecia (hair loss) because in most cases it is symmetrical on either side of their flanks.

The fact that it's not on both sides would make me suspicious enough to go to the vet, especially when you add in the weight gain as a symptom.
