Just thought I'd share Cash's latest kidney levels, and they aren't looking good :( I had switched him to Solid Gold Holistique Blendz from Hill's k/d to see if he could be on a better quality food without impacting his kidney levels. Solid Gold has low protein and fairly low phosphorous, but apparently something else is lacking. His BUN is almost up to what it was when he was first diagnosed, and his creatinine level is up too! Needless to say, he will be transitioning back to Hill's starting tomorrow.

Previous - 12/09
BUN - 59 down to 32 (normal range 7-25)
Phosphorus - 8.5 down to 7.3 (normal range 2.9-6.6)
Creatinine - 2.6 down to 1.7 (normal range 0.3-1.4)
Glucose - 138 down to 111 (normal range 60-110)

Previous - 6/10
BUN - 32 up to 39
Phosphorus - 7.3 down to 5.7 (yay, normal!)
Creatinine - 1.7 up to 2.3
Glucose - 111 down to 103 (yay, normal!)

Previous - 1/11
BUN - 39 down to 22 (NORMAL!!)
Phosphorus - 5.7 down to 5.1 (still normal)
Creatinine - 2.3 down to 1.9 - a little high, but good that it's come back down
Glucose - 103 down to 98 (still normal)

Current - 7/11
BUN - 22 up to 48 (not good at all)
Phosphorus - 5.1 down to 4.7 (still normal)
Creatinine - 1.9 up to 2.9 (not good)
Glucose - 98 down to 96 (still normal)

im not too sure what your dogs kidney problems are but i had this experience with my own dog and him being so young it really freaked me out.

what i did was change the food from acana pacifica to wellness simple solutions the rice and salmon kind. i am a vet tech and my dr wanted me to put my dog on royal canin renal mp (moderate protein) so i said i will try this first and then ill do royal canin if this doesnt work.

i also added extra fish oil to his diet, i would use a human fish oil capsule - 1200mg then i came accross a liquid made by Welactin that you squirt over their food. this worked much better for us. fish oil has been shown to help with all kinds of health issues.

kato's bun was in the 30's normal is up to 20 or 25 and his cre was up to around 3.5 - normal stops around 2 - but it depends on which lab does the bloodwork and what type of machines they do.

after 1 month of only changing his diet his bun was in the normal range at around 20 and his cre was around 1.6.

i will continue to check it every month but this worked for us it seems for now. Good luck with your pup :O) hope he feels better soon x

I am sorry to hear that Cash's levels have gone up! I haven't logged on in awhile, but we had Millie's levels checked today so I was coming in to update. Her's are actually down and by quite a bit! We are using the Solid Gold Holistique Blends as well. Her BUN today was 28 and creatinine was 2.2!!!!

They were just checked last in March and her BUN was 56 and Creatinine was 2.9. So they have actually dropped to really good level (the normal range for the test our vet uses for BUN is 27). I was thinking it probably had to do with the food, but I guess maybe not since Cash didn't respond. Can't figure out what else it might be since that seems to be the only thing we have changed.

Sorry to hear about Cash! Hopefully you will have better luck with the Hills.

kidney problems...part 2

For those of you who have posted the BUN/Creatinine levels - thank you...also which food you switched to. Have any of your boxer kids had the incontinence? Our girl is young (2yrs.) - she is now in doggy diapers when in the house. If you have had this problem, did you notice improvement re:leakage after levels were closer to normal?

Millie is 3 and the leakage has been sporadic her whole life. Mostly it's at night in her sleep and typically if we put her out for a bit right before bed, she is good. We also don't fill the water bowl completely at dinner time. We have the diapers, but I hate using them. They don't work all that well since her little nub tail doesn't stay in the diaper and it shifts down and then becomes less effective. At least she doesn't mind when I put them on her, she just lays there and let's me change her like a baby.

I haven't noticed if the incontinence is related to her kidney values or not, but I suppose it could be. When her BUN was up in March, she had more accidents and was wearing the diapers every night, but she hasn't had an accident recently probably not even in the last 3 months.

Unfortunately though, due the chance of her leaking we cannot leave them out in the house during the day. We've given them the kitchen so at least they don't have to be in crates the whole time, but I still feel bad. :(

Don't know if I really offered anything helpful with this post, but this has just been our experience.

Glad to hear that the Holistique Blendz is working for Millie! That is awesome that her levels have come down so much appicon!! Cash is the exception to just about everything, so I'm chalking it up to that
As for the incontinence, I do notice that he tends to wet his belly bands he wears at night more when his levels are higher - even when we restrict his water at night and let him out right before bedtime. Cash is fine out in our house during the day (with some rooms closed off of course), and rarely has an accident.
We have almost completed the process of switching him back over to the Hill's k/d, and have gone back to feeding him smaller meals and giving his Azodyl 3 times a day. I've upped his aluminum hydroxide dosage, and am continuing to give him fish oil and his renal essentials vitamin twice a day.
