Last night DH cooked crab legs and while he was eating a piece of shell fell on the floor and Caney ate it. I was a little concerned at first but brushed it off as I've fed her plenty of raw meals in the past containing pieces of bone that size or larger, and she has had no problem passing them. But just now DH went outside in the yard with Caney and she threw up 2 small amounts of foam with some blood in it. :( Besides that she is not really acting sick or anything. But of course I am worried. Is there anything I should do besides watch her closely over the next 24 hrs? Should I feed her something soft tonight instead of her kibble?

I would put a call into the vet and see what they have to say. I hope it is minor and Caney is better soon!

Called the emergency vet, they said we should have given her some high fiber bread last night when she ate the shell :-/ then they gave me their prices for a visit and x-rays. Talked it over with DH and he thought we should wait and see how she does tonight. And thankfully she seems to be doing ok. An hour ago she didn't want to eat at all but just now I offered her some canned food that we had leftover from when Creek was sick and she gobbled it right up. I think we'll keep the dog door closed for a couple of days so we can monitor her trips outside and make sure everything is normal.

So glad that Caney seems to be doing Ok. Thanks for passing on the tip re HF bread. My girl sometimes crunches snails before we can get it off her ( I know gross! ) - and it worries me as their shells are so thin and sharp when broken.

When monitoring her bathroom trips, bear in mind that a very dark, black stool, can also indicate GIT bleeding, as well as obvious signs of blood.

Hope that Caney continues to do well and sending lots of positive wishes her way.

How's she doing today? Thora has eaten jagged pieces of toy recently that caused the same thing. She would get an upset tummy and runny poo with bright red blood in it. Only lasted a day or two and she did pass the pieces. I always wondered how it got through because she always throws up the pieces she swallows in the middle of the night (fun). Hopefully Caney is able to pass the crab shell and everything is back to normal soon. It probably just nicked her a little on it's way through.

Caney has had no issues since the other night when I posted about her throwing up. The following day (which was yesterday) she went about her normal routine, ate both her meals, and had normal BMs. appicon Today has been the same. Whatever it was seems to have passed, thankfully!

Danielle -- Glad everything turned out OK when Thora had a similar issue. It is scary seeing blood!
