Cancer Diagnosis

Hi again everyone. A few weeks ago I had posted about my baby, Copper. She was operated on for bloat and a twisted stomach about a month ago. While they were operating, they found a spot on her spleen, so they removed it and sent it out to be tested. It came back malignant for Splenic Hemangio Sarcoma ... an incurable cancer.

Tuesday I took her down to a specialist in Gaithersburg, MD ... who was absolutely wonderful. He told me that we can go ahead and treat any cancer that may have broken off from the original spot with chemo. He is giving her about 6 months without the chemo and maybe 8 months with. The cancer is incurable, so it will probably most definitely come back someplace else again.

It was a tough decision, especially because Copper is our first born baby. But, because of her age (11 years) and the fact her life will not be extended significantly, and the additional cost, we have decided not to go the chemo route. The doctor said that she may even live longer ... he just doesn't know for sure.

We are going to try to give her the best that we can for her remaining time with us. My boss has been absolutely wonderful, even arranging to get me a laptop so that I can do some work from home in the evenings.

I absolutely hate the cancer beast! I'm so sorry you and Copper are having to live with it. Many of us here have had the experience. We have one member whose boxer boy Rocky has beaten the odds and still is with us living with bone cancer long after his projected survival time frame. Keep your chin up and stay positive. Our dogs do sense our sadness.From experience I can tell you life will feel like an emotional roller coaster for a while. We are here for you and Copper. Hugs from me and Chancey.

Thanks everyone. I kept looking at her Tuesday night and asked her what we should do. We took her to my son's football practice ... even though we are not supposed to take dogs ... but nobody said a word ... I'll try to keep my chin up ... the love and support of our family and friends will get us through this ... I appreciate everything from everyone on this site!!

I'm sorry to hear that.

My 6 year old was diagnosed with the worst stage of Mast Cell cancer back in May and given about 18 weeks to live. Like you, we decided against chemo (because of the unknowns - the chemo itself could have killed him, would have worsened his quality of life, and would not "cure" him but rather just delay the inevitable.

Since then, he has started to sprout a new tumor but is otherwise the same dog we've always had. We're hoping that when he does get sick, it will happen quickly and that he won't suffer. I wish the same for you! For now we are just enjoying our time with him, spoiling him (he has gained 5 lbs since May!) and trying not to think of him as sick.

When angel Kiddo was diagnosed with lymphoma I remember someone here told me to take lots of pics and videos. I'm so glad I did. I lost her just over 5 months ago. While I haven't been able to watch all the videos I took of my "love puppy" yet,I am so happy I have the memories recorded.

I'm so sorry to hear about Cooper.
I dread the 'C' word as do most people, you must be devastated.
Enjoy this time with Cooper and like Wanda said take lots of pics & videos, in time you'll be able to watch them with a faint smile.
