Your male is ready to go on adult food now. Many people do not feed puppy food as in the wild a pup would not be eating a puppy food but would be eating whatever the parent ate.
I switched Harley over at about 4-5 months and he is doing fine.

More on Puppy Food...

I found a small, local pet supply store in town that is fantastic. I asked the owner all types of questions about feeding puppy food vs. adult food. Lael is obviously too young (14 weeks) to feed an adult food, in my mind. The owner's advice was to start feeding a premium adult food to any larger breed pup at 3 months, in order to prevent "overgrowing" them. Anyone heard of this? He explained that the rich puppy food causes their bones to eventually outgrow their tendons, ligaments and muscles... leading to weak joints (especially hips). This is dangerous for larger dogs because their musculoskeletal system must support more weight.

If the dogs can "overgrow" by being fed puppy food for too long... when should one switch to adult food? Or would you say his advice was directed more toward even larger breeds, such as Great Danes?
