Hello, my name is Nikki. Im looking at buying either a boxer or a lab, but I want the dog to be able to swim, can boxers swim? What is the average for weight of boxers and also I just currently purchased an english bulldog for my boyfriend which is male, would a male boxer get along with another male or am I best to stick with getting a female?

I hear that some boxers swim, but I don't believe they are known for their swimming abilities. As for our Hammer, he sinks like a stone! We have a pool and we tried to teach him when he was younger, so that in case he fell in, he could get out OK, but that mission failed. We just don't leave him unsupervised when outside.

Thanks for the info. I know my boyfriends new bulldog sinks too, we just bought a house with a pool also, and I've always wanted a dog to swim with me, how old is your boxer, I was kinda skittish about them at first, but I really like everything I've read about them. My boyfriend races motocross and travels to various tracks, I wanted a dog that would get along with others, be good with kids and protective at the same time - is yours like any of these traits?

:) Nikki

Hammer is the greatest!!! He is my first Boxer and my husbands second! He is 5 months old and LOVES kids! I have heard that most boxers love children and tend to be protective of their families. They look intimidating, and I think that's the reason people think they're mean, but Hammer doesn't have a mean bone in his body!! We are looking to adopt another one very soon! I've heard people on this site that talk about their boxers swimming, so maybe it's an individual taste, we'll try again with Hammer next spring.

I think you would really love having a boxer!! And any questions you have will be answered here by the great folks at BW! They know all about these lovable creatures!

You would definitely love a boxer. Dakota is almost 6 months now and he gets along with are other dog who is 13 years old. They are best friends. (of course it took a little while, they are both males) As for the swimming, Dakota fell in the pool the first day he was home and sank like a stone. I have put him in a few times with me to ensure he learned how to swim in case he fell in again and he swam but didn't much care for it.

I took Indy to a friend's in May to play with his Lab. After running around in the sun for a while the lab decided it was time for a swim in the small pond on the property. Bailey ran headlong for the pond with Indy in hot pursuit.

I saw one splash as Bailey jumped in, then a second splash. I realized Indy had followed Bailey without thinking. I ran to the pond as I have heard some Boxers can't swim. Rocky, our first Boxer could swim.

When I got there, Indy was swimming along the shore with his head held high above the water, still in pursuit of Bailey. Bailey came out, Indy came out. Bailey went back in. Indy stayed out.

He has gone in several times since then, but has never gone where it is so deep, that he has to swim. He'll go in 'til the water covers his back, but thats it. It's good to know he can swim if has to.

   Tom

Hello, weclome to BW!

Boxers are friendly with people and other dogs, and they are protective of thier homes at the same time. But in fact they are not real gaurd dogs (althought their ancestors were). If you get a little pup and he grows up with another dog, they will get along just great. We have a lot of members here with two or three) or even more LOL) dogs in the house, and they say their dogs get along just fine. At least, two males are considered to be not the worst combination (two females are).
Boxers are very dependant on "their" people. They like to be around them all the time, like to participate in everything and they are inside dogs. THey are very energetic and playful, in fact some owners say their boxer CRAZY
Now about swimming. My boxer girl Tina is a good swimmer and so are a few boxers in the neibourhood. Bur I have also heard that boxer's bodies are not designed for swimming, so some boxers cannot swim.

I think it's very wise of you to do some research before getting a pup :) Feel free to ask any questions you may have!

Normally, every mamal can swim (even elephants!).
But if you want a dog that you know will enjoy swimming, a lab is the best choise. Don't expect a boxer to swim with you. (There maybe some execptions though)
On the other hand, lab's are generally not as protective as boxers. Let me refraise this : People think that labs are not as protective as boxers & it is what people think what determines their actions :D
If you really want a dog who loves to swim, combined with a 'don't mess with me' factor you must start looking elswhere.
A Rhodesian Ridgeback maybe ?

You will love your dog whether it is a Boxer, a lab or something else, because it is YOUR dog

Cheers,
Laika, Luna & Tom

ps every dog that has the right education can get along with kids....as long as the kids are also educationed. :p

I have to add that Hammer may not be a swimmer, but his antics around the pool when we're in it make it so enjoyable! He just thinks it is so odd that Mom and Dad like to get in that wet hole in the ground, and he runs around like crazy while we swim. It's adorable!!!
