Can Amoxicilin cause Diarrhea?

My 41/2 mont old is Amoxicilin, she had surgery and they found thickening in her intestine, which was due to a rare parasite. She came home on Saturday and her stool was loosely formed and was normal by Monday. Today I noticed she has diarrhea, could this be from the Amoxicilin? I know it does cause it in humans. Should I give her something with it, to help her tummy?

Hi,

Any antibiotic can kill off the "good" bacteria in their gut & cause diarrhea. You can help by giving some yogurt ( a spoon or so - use low or non fat only, plain or vanilla are best) so that the good bacteria can be re-introduced into her system. Just be sure you give the yogurt to her 2 hours before or 2 hours after the antibiotic since some antibiotics are rendered useless in the presence of dairy. You can either put the yogurt in her food or offer it separately as a treat.

Any antibiotic can cause a number of stomach issues. The yogurt is a great idea. Hope she feels better soon.

You might also want to try adding 1-3tsp of canned pumpkin (not the pie filling) to her food in addition to the yogurt. Hope your furbaby feels better soon ~ Cathy

You can also give Roxy a probiotic supplement while she's on antibiotics, available at most pet supply stores and online.
