We went to Doggy Palooza, a local dog event, last Saturday and one of the first things we did was head up to the lure coursing because Oscar enjoyed it so much last year.

We only did it one time last year but he was beautiful as he ran in full stride after the rabbit tail. Here are the event pictures from last year:

On Saturday, as we headed up the hill towards the lure course, his excitement became uncontrollable. He ignored all the booths, people, and other dogs and pulled as hard as he could towards the lure course gate. Fortunately there was only one dog ahead of him and he got in quickly for his run.

His behavior was very unusual for him and it really seemed as though he remembered this event.

About an hour later we brought him back for a second run and we had to wait about 20 minutes as the line was long. He refused to play with other dogs in line, refused treats (Nature's Variety freeze dried turkey liver, a favorite) to settle down and spent the entire time whining and pulling to get into the lure course. At times I literally had to hold him by the chest as he was up on his hind legs. We had a limited slip collar and if I didn't hold him he would gasp for air. It took the two of us to control him, and by the time it was our turn, we humans were tired but Oscar was ready to go. The operated commented that his extension was beautiful.

What do you think? Can a dog remember an event they enjoyed, even though it was only one time, and recognize it a year later?

Not sure but I can tell you that my JRT can remember where something happened he didn't like from one time to the next. He used to LOVE going to the vet until we had him neutered! I try to tell him that they can only cut those off once but he absolutely hates the place now

kneesaa remembered Santa, she was told if she was a good girl she could go see Santa, then we went and it was at Petco and she wasn't really paying too much attention till I said, there's Santa, and she saw him and she went nuts, I had to hold her by her chest, she got up in the sleigh when it was her turn and wouldn't stop kissing him, everyone in line was roaring at her! the guy playing Santa was like...wow, she seems to really like me!!!

My Shelby didn't forget my DH's friends after 17 months of deployment. The first time of of them came over to the house he had to set on her to get her to calm down. She loves when people come over but this was insane, she knew who he was and that she hadn't seen him in a LONG time and that she needed some lost time attention!!

It sounds completely possible to me. Either way, I think you found a fun sport for your baby. I would love to take Deuce to a lure course.

Hey, we saw you there! It didn't connect for me until now that that was you! There sure were a lot of boxers :D . Piper Ann did the lure coursing, too-she tried to chase the knot about five feet in front of the actual lure instead of the lure, silly girl.

To answer your question, I think it's totally possible for a dog to remember something fun for years. Most of us have stories about a dog who has one bad experience and remembers that for their entire life-why would they be able to remember a single good experience for just a year? :)

I really believe its possible. Dakoda came away with us on honeymoon 2yrs ago and we went back over 12months later for another vacation. As soon as we were getting close she started to whine and wiggle in the car and as we came up to the turn she looked up the hill to where the house was. When we got out of the car she ran straight to the front door and ran around the house like a kid in a candy shop!
It looks like you guys had a fab day!

I think they must be able to remember special places & events. Maybe not for as long as an elephant  but long enough I sure.

Yes they can remember. On return from our 2 weeks holiday this year we stopped into see some friends who live 200 miles from us, so Dino has been there once when he was a wee puppy when he fell in their pond ;) and once when he was about 18 months. So about a mile from their house Dino's head pops up and he starts looking out the window, starts to jump around in the car all excited and was beside himself by the time we pulled up at their house - so without a doubt he remembered where he was going :)
