I have a 4 month old boxer girl. I woke up this morning and found my baby covered in bumps, lots and lots of them. Her lips were swollen and it is swollen under her left eye. At first I thought she was digging in a ant hole or something, but i went and looked in the yard and I dont see any ant holes. So I
gave her a bath and some benydrill(sp?). Alot of the bumps are gone and the swelling in her lips is almost gone, but she still has swelling under her eye. I was just wondering if she had hives or if its even possible for her to get hives.

My Roxanne got a nasty case of hives, I guess it is very common. We were worried because she had just had two mast cell tumors removed and then I find more bumps. The vet gave her a shot and I kept her on Benedryl until it went away. It lasted two days, not sure what caused it maybe a spider bite?

Hi !

I also have a female white and brindle"Harley"( actually all white except for one patch of brindle on her back !) that would get hives when she was a puppy. I never knew what it was that she was reacting to, but benadryl seemed to work wonders for her. After she was about 13 months old she never had them again. Good luck !

Iris,
Can I suggest that anytime your dog has hives and develops swelling around the mouth, face and or neck you should get her to the vet right away. They will give her a shot to stop the reaction. My Becca had SEVERE allergic reactions to insect bites. Benedryl was not enough to help her during these reactions. I came close to losing her twice when I nearly didn't get her to the vet in time.
Let the vets check her out, they'll tell you if in your dogs case it is something serious.

I have a four year old brindle boxer and he gets hives and has for the last two years. They have not been as bad this past year, but at first he was covered with them. I originally thought they were mosquito bites, as we have a lot of them around here. But the second time he was covered we took him to the vet. The vet had no idea what was causing it, but thought it was probably an allergy to something. He suggested we change his food to the brand he carried (very expensive), which we did for a while. Now he is back on Kibbles and Bits and seems to be doing OK, except for a few hives here and there, and we still do not know what is causing it.

my little girl got hives quite a few times last year when she was just about 7 or 8 months old, the vet said to give her some benedryl, which worked. I had the feeling it had something to do with the heat because she would get them after being outside or going for a walk. It got me worried that she would have to be on medication for her whole life, but she hasn't had any hives since last year:D :D

Hives

Hey there.......

We took our boxer boy camping this weekend......He got stung about 5 times by bee's......it seemed that he instantly got the hives......He had bumps all over......I ran to get some benedryl and he cleared up after about an hour......I have had this happen to him before......It is so scary to see your boxer with , what seems, twenty thousand lumps and bumps......I don't know who it scared more this weekend, Angus or my son......But, he is better now........But, I for one believe Boxer's can get hives....Angus is living proof...........

Hives

Our 8 month old brindle male has been suffering with hives all of this weekend. He had been on antibiotics for a week to take care of an infection and our vet though that he was having an allergic reaction. The vet put him on a fairly high dose of steroids to control the hives but as soon as we lower the dose, the hives return. Make me wonder if the hives were actually cause by the drug or if it could be something else.

Yes they can!

My white female got a terrible case last August when she was about five months old. We treated our lawn with fertilizer on Saturday and thoroughly watered it in before we let the girls back out on it. Everything was fine until Lucy woke up Sunday morning with a swollen lower eye lid. I gave her a bendadryl and it went away. About four hours later she came in from outside with her other eye slightly swollen and some bumps, which I thought were bug bites at the time (they were hives). I gave her another benadryl which helped. About another six hours later she came in from outside and had a full blown case of hives. From about 8 a.m. until 10:00 at night I had given her four bendadryl. She really needed another one but I thought I had already given her too many for her little body. At 2 in the morning she woke and was so uncomfortable she went outside and was running around like a crazy dog. I decided at that time to take her to the emergency vet. They gave her a shot of benadryl and a prednisone shot and sent us home for a bath in oatmeal shampoo at 4:00 a.m and to wash all of her bedding and blankets. She seemed to be fine (very tired) and the hives were gone. When I got home from work that afternoon she had them again, although they were not as bad. My regular vet was out of town so I took her back to the emergency vet. They gave her another shot of prednisone and gave us prednisone tablets to take for two weeks. They said it could have been the yard chemicals but they didn't know because it had been such a long time before she showed a reaction. On Wednesday I finally got her in to see the regular vet. Believe it or not she still had a trace of the hives. They eventually all went away. My regular vet gave me a prescription of prednisone to keep at home in case it happened again to save me from having to go to the emergency vet. We haven't had much of a problem this year, just a few hives that have gone away rather quickly.

FYI on the benadryl the emergency vet told me 25 mg for every 25 pounds every 4-6 hours. She said I had probably given Lucy more than enough!!!

I had the sme problem!

Im new, and I joined this board tonight to find out about hives and swelling. My little 1 year old flashy fawn girl got that terrible swelling about 4 months ago. She had gotten hives several times before--small bumps that looked like mosquito bites but i knew boxers were sometimes prone to this so i didnt worry when she got them, plus the breeder told me her mother got them occasionally and not to worry. On to the swelling.
Well, one late night her eye lid swelled up. First it was the size of a grape, then a golf ball then a tennis ball. Then the other eye started swelling, along with her ears, top of her head and then in the morning her jowls. It was terribly heart wrenching. I was hysterical. I had given her benadryl when the first eye started, i just thought she had been bit. The swelling happened fairly fast and in the middle of the night her eyes were swollen shut. By morning i couldnt even look at her. I was a wreck and had to go to work. My fiance took her to the vet and they assumed she ate moldy walnuts. ??? They gave her a shot of prednisone and sent him home with pred. tablets and advised to keep her on benadryl until swelling was all gone. She recovered fine and we kept her from eating any fallen walnuts. Then again one night about 1 month ago, her jowl swelled up suddenly--she had been no where near walnuts! I gave her the same meds. the vet gave us from before and she was fine a little later. That's when i knew it wasnt bad walnuts, it was simply related to the whole allergic reaction/hive situation that she is prone to. So now i keep pred and benedryl on hand wherever we go--just in case. Im hoping this is the type of reaction that gets less and less severe with age. Her 2nd was significantly less severe than the 1st. So i hope this helps you out a little. Im glad my baby isnt the only one who has experienced this.
