Camping with my Boxer

We are thinking about going camping over the 4th of July weekend, but I am concerned if Mya can handle the heat. I live in Texas and it is already getting into the 90's on somedays. The trip would be 3 nights and 4 days at a nearby lake. There is alot of good shade and usually a nice breeze, but will a few days hurt her? We'd also be sleeping in tents at night but it should be in the 70's at night. What do ya'll think?

I had the same dilemma - we are also camping for 4th of July and I would have liked to take the dogs. In the end I decided that it will be too hot. Mine only seem to be able to handle heat for about an hour (if that) and then they really need to be in air conditioning. I try to stick with fall and spring if I want to include boxers on camping trips. It's no fun for them if they are hot and at risk of heat stroke anyway.

We camp all the time with our boxer. We go to Douglas Lake in Tennessee, and it does get in the 90's there in the summer. However, we have not had any problems with our boxers because of the shade, cool breeze and the lake. Our Harley (who has now crossed the rainbow bridge) just loved going. Although he was 10 years old last summer, the heat didn't bother him a bit. He would often take a dip in the middle of the day and loved swimming with us, as well as the boat rides.

Our new baby, Duncan, is only 12 weeks old and has gone with us for 2 weekends already. He has a blast. We are also going back over the fourth and we are really looking forward to it. I have worried more about a snake bite than the heat.

Hope it works out for you!

I'm originally from Texas so I understand your concerns, but I think she will do fine. We've always taken our boxer when we go. It gets pretty hot up here in Arkansas too, but he seems to handle the heat just fine--we even leave him outside some while we are at work if it's nice outside, and he doesn't have a problem with the heat. Mya will have a blast playing in the lake too. The water will help to cool her off if she gets too hot. And, to be honest, I don't think you would have as good of a time if you didn't take her. So, I say go for it. I think you will be pleasantly suprised!! You'll have to give us an update when you get back on how she did.

Texas Heat...UGH!

I used to live in Texas, and I am fully aware of the heat. I have gone camping in the middle of August with a boxer, and she seemed to do well (especially is you are near water). We took Piper to the Guadalupe and she would just wade in the water--loving it. I think your baby will be fine--just my 2 cents.

We are going camping the 4th of July weekend, too. We are in Kentucky so I would imagine it will be slightly cooler here, but still very hot. We are taking Sidda hoping that with shade and the lake she will have fun, but if it doesn't work we are only an hour away from family so we can bring her back. We took her once, last year and she did great. I really hope it goes well this time and she has fun. And I hope the same for you guys!

We have decided to take her with us. If it does end up being too hot I can put her in the car for a while with the A/C on or take her for a boat ride. Her boxer boyfriend will be there too so I'm sure they will spend the day chasing each other in and out of the water. Thanks for the opinions.

I'd say that as long as you treat her like you would yourself, or one of your skin kids, she should be fine. Keep plenty of water on hand, shade, and get her wet if she looks hot... she should have fun. If it's too hot for you, it's too hot for her. If it's not, she should be fine. They're basically the same as humans as far as how much heat/cold they can take because they don't have fur like other dogs...
