My 8 month old girl Abby had hives back in the summer, so with the advice of the vet we switched her to lamb and rice. I chose Solid Gold hundchen Flocken. Her coat is perfect, however she never really did well on the food as far as stools and gas. We think the Solid gold is too rich for her. She has been on the food for over 6 weeks and her stools were always soft, so we are switching her again to California Natural lamb and rice. So far so good, but I was reading on dog food analysis.com and here was a quote from there [This food would be highly suitable for individuals that suffer from allergies, sensitive stomachs, or as part of a rotation with other foods that contain different meat protein sources and a range of fruits/vegetables.]
It sounds like from the very last sentence the food is not really meant to be used as a regular diet? Am I reading that correctly? I was hoping to keep her on the cal natural if she continues to do well on it.
The vet wants me to keep her on lamb and rice.

Please keep in mind that dogfoodanalysis is not the end all and be all of anything, it is simply a starting point and a helpful site. There is no reason that you cannot use California Natural for long periods of time or forever if it works for her it is formulaed to be a forever food especially for dogs with allergies. If you are able to find 1-2 other foods you could rotate every 3-4 months between that would be ideal, but trust me I know how hard it is to find a food for an allergy dog and it's scary to switch when you find something that works so I wouldn't sweat it. If you want to check it out I feed my boy Natural Balance's Lamb Meal and Brown Rice and he does really well on it so that may be an option for you to switch off to every few months.

Good luck!

I just moved Bentley my 11 month old over to California Natural Lamb and Rice. He was on Blue Buffalo since we brought him home at 7 weeks, and the last bag we got from them we noticed the kibble was lighter in color than past bags. He developed bad gas and the runs. We did a 10 day transition to Cali. Nat. and so far so good his stools have firmed up nice.

I also read the same thing on dogfoodanalysis.com Ran a search and some websites stated that some dogs can develop allergies to certain meats and even grains when feed to them for long periods of time.

I've decided to keep him on the Lamb and Rice for a couple of months then switch him to Cali. Nat. Herring and Sweet Potato and rotate every couple of months. I will probably rotate him on to other Natura foods as well like Innova chicken lamb and rice or the new red meat product. When he gets 1.5 years probably closer to 2 years I'd like to try some grain-free foods in his diet.
