Has anyone ever used Burt's Bees insect repellant? It is all natural and supposed to be safe for children and pets.

I haven't tried it personally, but the ingredients seem safe enough for use on dogs. For Caney I actually use an all natural Hot Spot Spray that I bought a while back for her itchiness related to allergies. It didn't help much for the allergies  but one of the ingredients is Tea Tree Oil which works great to repel insects.

I finally found it and I'm not impressed. 1. It's expensive - $11 plus taxes for 4ounces. 2. It doesn't really spray, it comes out as a blast so it's difficult to coat the dog. 3. It makes him sneeze and he tries to roll to get it off. However, this passes in minute. 4. It does not repel mosquitoes. There might have been a few less but we were definately being bit.

That's unforunate :(
I found this link a while ago comparing active ingredients in insect repellents and their effectiveness on repelling insects vs. their safety. It said that Picardin is very effective and virtually non-toxic to humans, dogs, and cats. Also included in the review: DEET, permethrin, and essential oils.

I have always heard that Skin so Soft by Avon was great as an insect repellant. I heard it works wonders for fleas but I have never tried it.

We ALWAYS used Skin So Soft when I was younger. Just last week I was over at my parents' house and couldn't find any bug spray to put on while I was in the yard, so I used that. I still got about 5 mosquito bites after I put it on  Maybe the mosquitoes have become immune to it after 20 years...

I don't know what bugs you're trying to protect against or where. If you're talking about your yard and mosquitos, plant marigolds! Mosquitos don't like the smell of them. I did this last year and my deck became a much nicer place! This year I replanted them. Last night I was out with the dogs and not one mosquito by the house and flower beds, but as soon as we got to the back of the property there was swarms of them! They also keep other bugs out of your garden.

Fleas

I am currently looking for something that will kill fleas and prevent them. I have done some research on the internet and found a recipe for a flea spray that uses lemons. They say if you slice up lemons then cover them with boiling water and let them steep overnight then strain off the pulp and put the liquid in a spray bottle. They say it will kill or the flease will jump off, as fleas do not like the smell of lemons. I also found a site that says to put salt on your furniture and carpet for a day to kill the fleas. Several other sites say to give your dog garlic, or brewers yeast tablets as fleas do not like the smell and will not get on your dog. I also found a site that said to put apple cider vinger in your dogs water to help prevent fleas. A lady I work with does this and it seems to work. I also found a recipe for essential mint oil and rubbing alcohol that you spray on your carpet to kill fleas. I have also read that fleas do not like eucalypts. I have not tried any of these solutions but am planning to this weekend. I have recently heard that frontline and other chemicals that are applied can cause cancer. I am not sure but my last boxer died of stomach cancer after 9 1/2 years and I am trying to keep everything natural for my two. For your own piece of mind I would search the internet for natural flea remedies or holistic flea remedies. Sorry so long but I hope this helps.

We pour skin so soft in the pool. It works to keep flying things away from you while swimming. I haven't tried it on the dogs. Buddy has a horrible time with flies roosting on his back. I may try some on his back see if it works.
