Bunny Hopping

I have a quick question for other experienced boxer owners. I have a 10 week old male pup (Gus) that was playing with one of his littermates the other day! They played hard, and they were around some tile that caused my little guy to do the splits a couple of times. When he got home he crashed, and was exhausted....which I knew would be normal! That night though he seemed slow to get up, and reluctant to run when we took him outside, which wasn't like him. The next morning he still seemed tired, his gait was OK, normal energy at work with me, he can jog (so to speak) without difficulty, but when he wants to run it seems like he does a little bit of a bunny hop. Of course when I read about bunny hopping everything points to hip dysplasia. I called the vet and they said to give him a couple of days becuase he may just be sore! Should I be concerned......of course now I am driving myself crazy reading all of the stuff on hip dysplasia, and watching him non stop analyzing his every move! Has anyone else had this experience with a pup?

At his age, I wouldn't be overly concerned. If the problem persists, you should have him checked by your vet. In the meantime, make sure that you don't do any forced exercise and make sure that you don't over feed him.

Good luck!

Thanks! He saw the vet today for his shots....they did a physical exam on his hips and said that they didn't feel loose, or that he had any clicking! They did say that he stands a little cow hocked. They are gonna keep a close eye on him, and x-ray his at 1 year if there are any changes!

I have heard that spending a lot of time on slippery floors is not good for puppies, because they can't get traction and too much slipping can damage the hip socket formation. Not sure how much truth there is to that BUT... worth keeping in mind. If he was doing a lot of slipping the other day then that would be a good reason why his hips would be hurting now, even if it may not actually cause HD or even if he doesn't have HD.
