Well we knew immediately what was happening when he was 7 weeks old because the breeder had him on canned food and I fed him kibble with corn and he broke out right away. So I reasearched here :) and just lucky guessed it was the corn. As soon as I put him back on the canned food his hives went away a couple days later. So we bought him Chicken Soup kibble (no corn) and he went months with no problems. Until I added yogurt to his kibble and he had the same problems. Recently I gave him a raw egg yolk in his kibble and that was the worst one yet, he had hives for a couple weeks off and on from that. It was at the same time I switched his food to Canidae so I first thought it was the kibble but he has been eating it for a while now and the hives went away so i'm pretty positive it was the egg. With dogs who have allergies you should only add one new thing every now and again so you can be sure that was what caused the problem. Once something is ok then add another it makes it ALOT easier. ;) Dozers hives are about the size of a nickel and look like raised up bumpy hair, I always say he looks like a bumpy brown sheep! Sometimes on his white bits they are red bumps that look kind of like mosquito bites. They go away after a few hours and then come back again.

Wow what you described as Dozers hives sounds exactly like Coopers but they aren't the size of a nickle they are smaller. They have that raised up Bumpy hair and on his chest they are red bumps in his white hair. I am glad to hear that there is hope for me...lol Guess I just have to be patient with the food transition. I start the 50/50 mix tomorrow.

I just wanted to say thanks again to everyone so far. You all have been very helpful.

It could very well be the food or any treats you are feeding. I give no treats to Dozer he just gets raw bones and for training I give him pieces of kibble. He is so allergic to corn he can not even have things with corn syrup, corn starch, he even had a reaction from a Dorito chip one of my kids dropped! There is way to much "junk" in treats to sift through, so mostly I don't bother. Your pictures look very similar to Dozers hives even in the areas like on the back hips. I reall think it may be food related. Food allergies are way better to have than invironmental because you just don't feed it and they are ok..granted you figure it out! ;) Good luck.

Thanks again...is is possible for them not be allergic to corn then all of the sudden bam...they are?? I've also been wondering since I have been giving Cooper a mixtured of his old food and new...I'm up to 50/50 and it seems the hives have gotten a little worse, So i'm sorta wondering if I should try a different food than the Canidae cause I don't know if he is possibly allergic to the turkey, lamb or fish, in it. it could also be chicken. It may be smart of me to stop with treats for a while and just use kibble for treats just to be able to rule things out.

Us too!

Imagine my surprise (and relief!) when I logged on today to try to get some kind of info about these bumps our girl has developed this past week to find this post and your pics. It is just what we have going on. We were camping this past week when we noticed them so I was thinking mosquito bites. The week before we left her with some friends who raise greyhounds and she got some of their raw chicken feed so I also thought maybe a reaction to that - but she is on a Rx food that has chicken so I wasn't sure. Before we went camping we took her to a nearby pup scrub and I thought maybe a reaction to their shampoo - but they use all natural/organic stuff. I was stumped and worried!

I just got back from the vet who says we have some kind of hive/allergic reaction going on. She has the bumps on her back, hind quarters and the white of her chest, near where her collar lies. The bumps on the white are red and the white fur is brownish/discolored. They haven't seemed to bother her (itching/scratching). I initially thought maybe mosquito bites or an allergy to a shampoo. The vet prescribed Temaril P which she says is a steroid and an antihistamine combo. Anyone have experience with this med? or thoughts? She says there should be a noticeable improvement in 3-4 days. We are to give her 2 tabs 2 x a day for 5 days, then 2 tabs once a day for 5 days and finally 2 tabs every other day for 5 days.

So off we went to Petsmart to buy a harness to avoid her collar rubbing/irritating the area on her chest and load up on toys for the poor baby girl to help her feel better.

My concern now is figuring out what set this off. It is nice to know we aren't the only ones going through this! Keep us updated on your situation.

I'm so glad we're not the only ones! Rocky has been itching like a madman for the last week. He's always had some allergy problems, mainly with ear infections and chewing his feet. But last week we noticed tiny bumps on his chest and sides. He's been eating the same food all his life (he's 3) so I don't think it's that. I know my husband has been suffering with allergies this year more than ever, so I'm guessing it's the environment. We've giving Rocky Benadryl but I don't know how much it's really helped. We used to give him the Chlora-type tablets, so maybe we'll switch back to them again to see if we have better results. I was ready to take him to the vet today, but they're closed (Labor Day). I'm glad I read these posts.

Actually, dogs are more likely to show allergy symptoms to food they have been exposed to for long periods of time. This is why it's good to rotate foods every few months. The yeasty eras and paw cheing certainly sound like a food allergy-especiaally if the usual meds are not providing relief if you haven't changed the food.

Hello all just an update on Cooper. I took him to the vet on Saturday and my regular vet wasn't there but didn't want to wait til the middle of this week to see his regular doctor. Anyway the doctor came in and she looked at him and I was telling her what was going on and so she wanted to do a skin sample for Demodex and they scrapped him in 3 spots to get a sample and look at it. Well good news He doesn't have Demodex and from my understanding its something that lives in the skin and is very hard to get rid of. So from what the doctor saw she said its some sort of bacteria infectioin on his skin. She prescribed Cooper to be onand antibiotic called Cephelixen (spell??). He will be on that for 14 days along with keeping him on Chlortrimatron (spell??) sorta like benadryl but stronger for the same amount of time. It seems like its helping and I am not seeing as many bumps now. It's like some come and go but for the most part its only been 2/3 days hes been on the meds. So I am happy that they are going away, just hope they don't come back but still not sure what casued them. they did mention about getting an allergy test done at a skin specialist. Also to let you know Cooper is not on Eukanuba puppy large breed anymore. He is switched over to Canidae all life stages and he loves this stuff. HE chow's down like no tomorrow and funny thing is that I can already tell that his skin/fur feels much softer than when he was on Euk.

Sounds like a staph infection that may have been a side effect of scratching due to allergies. Hopefully,it will clear up with the diet change and meds. Food allergy testing is unreliable according to my vet and research I have done on my own.It seems the tests show many false positives. Environmental allergen tests seem to be more reliable however.

The vet tech said that I could do a food allergy testing which you take them off all treats, meds and feed them certain things for 2/3 months at a time to figure it all out. To me that didn't sound like a good thing. the other was going to a skin specialist and having them do an allergy test on the dog which you find the results out instanly but I also know that the 2nd choice will be a little more expensive.

It's the skin test for food allergies that isn't very reliable. The most reliable way would be the elimination diet.....but it's also very frustrating,or has been for me anyway.Good luck!
