Bumps Around Mouth - Help

My 8 month old female boxer has been getting "bumps" or blisters/pimples all around her mouth, particularly her lower chin. At first I thought it was just from all the biting/chewing she does not sticks, twigs, leaves, etc. They seem to erupt as blisters then open and sometimes bleed a little and then dry up but they don't go away. She is getting them on the top of her face now (lips & whisker area). Someone suggested they were perhaps ingrown hairs, but there are too many. I have tried keeping them clean with peroxide and putting ozonol ointment on them but she just licks it off.

Has anyone else had this problem. She has been bitten by a few bees and has had her lips/face swell, but benedryl brought the swelling right down. I'm going to take her too the vet's but though perhaps others may have insight into this problem.

Please help.

Is it that acne that boxers get ? Or do you think it's something else?

It sounds like Boxer acne. My boy Rebel had that problem from about 6 months and it came and went. Sometimes it was very bad and he had numerous blisters. Oddly enough it was about his "teen-age" that it was at its worst. My vet recommended swabbing it with Stridex sensitive skin pads, just like people use. I tried those and they worked pretty well.

At this point, he is 20 months, and we haven't had an outbreak in about 4 weeks. He got these mostly on his chin but sometimes on the edge of his lip and very rarely near his nose. I would have a vet familiar with Boxers take a look, but my guess it is Boxer acne. Good Luck

Acne is faily common in young boxers. If they look like they are infected, I would take her to the vet and have it checked out. It can sometimes be caused by eating out of a plastic bowl as they tend to harbour bacteria. If you are using plastic, get a stainless steel or ceramic bowl instead.

What kind of food and water bowl does your dog have? I have heard that plastic bowls can contribute to this problem, my mothers cat had the same problem, we changed the bowl to ceramic and the acne cleared up, since then I have never fed out of plastic bowls, and my dogs never had a problem. my vet said there is something in the plastic that animals are allergic too. alot of animals have no problem with it, but some do, and changing the bowl seemed to clear up the acne. I would try that.

Keisha used to have pimples around her mouth, on and off, too. I read on this board about the problems with plastic bowls but didn't think too much of it until her pimples got worse. Then I decided to get rid of my plastic feeding bowls and switched to stainless steel. Keisha hasn't had a pimple since - and that was about 1-1/2 years ago. Travis has NEVER eaten out of a plastic bowl and has NEVER had a pimple. If you use plastic bowls switch to stainless steel or ceramic as someone else suggested. I would think the peroxide should help in the mean time.

bumps around mouth

I know I'm a little late at replying to this, I just registered a few days ago. So, if you've already found your solution, just ignore me!
My Ozzie got red bumps around his mouth while we were on vacation (he was in a kennel for one week). We had used this kennel the year before with no problems, so I didn't think it was anything they did (at first). Supposedly they use your bowls and the food you send.
We found out later that they have a giant barrel of food that all the dogs get fed out of. Any leftovers are dumped back in the barrel. I was horrified! Needless to say, I don't use that kennel anymore.
Ozzie is usually fed a food made up of lamb and rice. The change in food is what did it. Turned out that he is allergic to corn and/or chicken.
Try gradually changing your dog's food, if you haven't already, and see what happens. It's common for boxers to have these sorts of food allergies (so my breeder tells me).

My Samantha got the same thing

My dog Samantha also had acne. She was allergic to her plastic bowls and frisbee. I had to take her plastic toys away and get her new rubber ones. The Dr. told me to get acne medicine over the counter and give to her.

My dog had the same problem at 8 months old, took him to the vet and got the $400. biopsy done. Came back with a term called non infectious cellulitous, gave me a $5 bottle of steroids and it cleared it up. Two weeks latter it was back, took him back and got another dose of steroids. Two weeks after I finished the steroids it was back again. This time I put him on a all raw died ( meat vegtables Ect.) I'm one week into that, But he is eating out of a plastic dish so I'll change that.
