For those of you that give bully sticks as treats, how often do you give them? I just bought some 6 inch sticks, the small skinny ones, and my boy can finish one in a sitting. Is it ok to give him one every night? It sure gets him out of my hair! Thanks!

hmmm our dog, not a boxer a frenchie only 26lbs eats bullies but we give him the 12inchers...you may want to try these...i think they may even come bigger too!! they will last longer and tend to be thicker..there have been times that he will finish (almost, we throw the ends out) in one sitting but it is rare. We usually give them to him at night and pick them up before bedtime (we only give them while he is supervised). i would guess he probably gets about 3/week or so. We try to keep him entertained as much as we can with interactive games but sometimes he really does just want to chew..especially when he is in a kitty chasing mood!!

I have tried the 12 inches, but he never gets through a whole one. Then, the result is a gross 7 inches of bully that lays around the house! Also, I think when you leave them around like that they go bad - he has had vomitting/bad stool episodes twice that I think I can trace back to "old" bullies like that.

If you have one that's not finished at the time you give it to your Boxer, will you allow him to chew it the next night? How long do you think they last before they "go bad?"

I've never had bullies go bad. Tara has had them dissapear under the couch and they re-surface a month later and she eats it with no problem

Two things:

First, regarding how many bullysticks per week - Geoff gets free access to as many as he wants. We have several lying around the house and he just helps himself whenever he feels like it - usually almost daily before bedtime. His favorites are the 12" braided ones, and I think he usually averages about 3 a week.

Second, Bullies don't go bad, at least the ones we buy don't.

As I mentioned before, at any given time we have three or four bullysticks at various stages of "finished" laying around the house. Geoff just picks and chooses his favore whenever he feels like it. Never had problem.

Out of curiosity - why do you think they would go bad, and how? The bullies we buy don't need to be stored in a freezer and do not come in any specific packaging. They can lay around for months before being fed to the dog. And they are no different when the dog has chewed on one end than they are before they've been chewed on - so why would one chewed end make a bullystick go bad?

I have suspicion just based on my own dog that they go bad when one end is chewed and sits around. I thought that maybe bacteria grows or something like that.

The reason I think this is that in Jan-Feb my dog had two episodes of vomitting/diarrhea that I coudn't explain. The only common thing with both incidencts is that earlier in the evening he had been eating an "old" bully, ie one with a chewed end that he had been working on for a while.

This could just be coincidence, but I have since switched to the 6 inch sticks, which he finishes in one sitting - they don't hang around all chewed up.

I don't want to freak anyone out -- this is completely my own idea!!
