They are my second choice on my list of dogs. There is a book called Dog eat Dog, Stern is the author, very funny book, they tell about this lady who raises and shows bull mastiffs. You can order it on Books a Millions web site. Tells you a lot about the breed. They are big droolers, the breeder said when interviewing potential owners, if they even showed a little bit that drool grossed them out she knew the breed was not for them!!! She sold one of her babies to Mike Tyson, the servants told her he wasn't treating it right and she marched right into the house and took the dog. I loved that book. Anyway, there is a new movie out and the dog in it is a bull mastiff. Something about Spot.

We too want our second dog to be a Bull Mastiff..infact that is what my husband wants. I would rather have a Boxer. Bulls are beautiful dogs too, they are bigger in size and just lovable!!! All the best with a BM.

I don't know that much about them but agree with Tina based on my one bull mastif that I do know.

We have a bull mastif on our block, an un-nuetered male, sumi (my female lab mix) used to get along great with him, but one day all of a sudden, she started growling at him when she saw him. Later I found out that he had gotten into the yard of one of her Boxer buddies that day (Ike and Turbo) and had gotten into a fight with the male boxer. The mastif's owners let him roam freely or he escapes, but after that Sumi never liked him, I wondered if she could smell Ike's blood on him or something, because she really loves Ike.

I would agree based on that one experience that if you got one to get a different sex than your boxer, and would especially encourage fixing (even more so than I normally do ;) ).

A fun thing to check would be the breed selector at http://www.purina.com they have a bunch of questions and they help you with narrowing down to specific breeds based on your answers.

Good luck with your new addition.

Hey Lisa M,

I tried that dog selecter at Purina and quess what?
I did it once and got the Bull Mastiff at number 1
with 90%. Next was the Rottweiler with 90% then the
Mastiff with 89%. Fourth was the Anatolian Shepherd
at 67%. Then finally came the Boxer(of course) in
5th place with a 67% score as well. So not to bad
huh?

I got the Boxer, then the Rottie, then the Doberman, then the Bull Mastiff and then the shepard. That was interesting.

There are three Bull Mastiffs in our neighbourhood and they are nasty! They live in the same townhouse and are very aggresive to other dogs. They have bitten 4 dogs that I know of and have done serious damage to a couple of them. Markus got attacked by one of them once. The person walking him, could not hang on to him. Fortunately, we got them apart before any serious damage was done. I must say though, that I don't think this is normal behavior for Bull Mastiffs. They were never socialized properly and don't get much exercise, just a walk around the block a couple of times a day.

Hey everybody think I may have possibly found me a
Bull Mastiff...sort of. Well actually I saw an ad
and checked it out. Turns out the puppies are half
Bull Mastiff half pit bull. The mother was a pit and
the father a BM. Not quite a BM but almost. The puppies
are all brindle in color and look to be mostly BM.
They seem really healthly and the owners are real nice.
What do you do you all think about this? Good Idea?
I will save a grand as that it was the average BM is
going for. I'm only looking for pet quality anyhow.
Well?

Maybe rescue

Have you thought about a Bull Mastiff rescue? Personally I would not buy a puppy from a cross breeding because where we live dogs of this type are usually bred for fighting or hunting :( It could well be different where you live and this litter may be an accident. It is probably worth while investigating the health problems in Bull Mastiffs and Pit Bulls so you are aware of any potential problems these pups may have.

Here are some Bull Mastiff rescue links:

The rescue thing is a good idea since your just looking for a pet and I never could understand why someone would charge money for a cross breed. I saw an ad in our paper once selling a dog that was 1/2 Boxer and 1/2 Pit. They wanted $350 for this dog, I couldn't believe it. I wouldn't be surprised if someone bought it too.

I would check out the rescues before buying one of these pups.:)
