First, it sounds like your new house is going to be beautiful. Congrats. We have a regular doggie door now and out 1 yr old son thinks it is hysterical to run into the kitchen (started running OY!) stick his hands in the water bowl and try to get out of the doggie door so we were talking about this type of door. My only concern was the infrared tag. How big is it? We were concerned if Ness and Porter would try to eat them.

Please let me know how it works out.

Smooshlips, once they check it out a couple of times, they will be going through it in not time. We pushed it open a couple of times and put Nestle through it and she was a pro in about a 1 1/2 days.

My Boxers have been using a doggie-door for many years now. Like yours, it is built into the wall. Actually it’s two doors. One from the house into an attached shed, then another from the shed outside. They enjoy the freedom a lot. My younger dog goes in and out at least 50 times a day. The one draw back I have found relates to traveling. It’s almost like a short course in potty training all over again. They spend a lot of time at the door whining for the first week or so.

I bought a mechanical door several years ago, over the internet, from a pet supply store in California. It used a special transmitter (not infrared) attached to the collar, to open the door, then it closed after the dog left the immediate area. First problem, the Boxer head shake would dislodge the battery in the transmitter sometimes. Next, one of the dogs would lay in front of the door. It would open up and stay open as long as the dog stayed there and if she moved her head just right, it would close and then re-open, she just loved that. Next, I found the door would not close sometimes when it was cold. It would attempt to close, get half way shut, then reopen, continue that until I shut it off manually. Very maddening at 2:00 AM. After 6 months it just stopped opening half of the time. I was never able to get it repaired. I spent $300.00 for that door and the manufacturer required returning it for service, but never even returned it to me. So I went back to a flap type door, that works all the time. Because of the custom opening for the mech. door, I had to make my own flap out of carpet. It has never failed in three years now.

In over 20 years of using a dog-door I have only had one problem with other critters using it, a feral cat, and it only tried it once, then after the chase was very glad to leave (get away.)

Great topic as this is my husbands project this weekend. Problem is we are putting one in the kitchen door to the garage and another in the wall of the garage to outside because the rest of our doors are glass and out to the pool wich we don't want him to have access to. My problem is finding a door that is made to be mounted into a wall. Where did you find your door? I need one that will be deep enough to go through drywall, stucco etc. Thanks a lot! Heather

In the near future our kids will have a doggy door. How has everyone trained them to use them?? I am looking foward to everyone talking about the one they have so I can make a good decision. Cop0251 one question about your door, can you have more that one infared collar tag?? Thank you in advance
