I discovered my boxer Buddy eating his own poop in the backyard today. Absolutely disgusting and he was disciplined. Besides disciplining what could be the cause of this and what can you do about it? He gets plenty to eat and I believe enough exercise.

You can get some stuff from Petco to give them that makes their poo yuck to them. Molly eats her poo but, ONLY when she uses it in her crate while we are gone. I havent quite figured out why but she still does it..hopefully, it is something they grow out of!

You are not alone - there are LOTS of of threads on this subject!

We just watch Biff like a hawk, and try to lift his poop up BEFORE he can get to it.

From the research I've been doing it seems to be pointing more towards a Behavioral issue rather then health/diet. Any thoughts?

I read somehwere that feeding them a bit of pineapple evryday will deter them from eating their poo. I think I would give that a try before buying something made specifically for copraphagia. The pineapple worked for us, or at least it appeared to. Abbie quit after giving her the pineapple and I haven't been giving her pineapple anymore and she hasn't really bothered with eating her own poop but everyonce in awhile I will catch her. She is also the type of dog who finds the stupidest stuff to put in her mouth and carry around, maybe that has something to do with it.

I have gone round and round with Cooper on this one. He started eating his poop when I switched him to a higher quality food (Canidae). I tried the tablets that you get at Petsmart, and I tried the powder from the vet and NOTHING detered him. I finally talked to the girl at the pet food store and she mentioned that maybe he didn't eat his poop when he was on Science Diet because there weren't any nutrients left after he passed it, but since Canidae was much higher quality pet food, he was getting the nutrients out of the food, but maybe not ALL of them. So she suggested a powder to put on his food called Prozyme and it's a pet food supplement. You put 1/4 teaspoon per cup of food. I SWEAR THIS STUFF IS MAGICAL. It's fixed the problem....Cooper is no longer a poop recycler!

This is my DH's theory also, as Biff only started eating his poops when we put him on Timberwolf. DH thinks Biff knows those poops are still full of goodness

He continues to eat his poops when he gets the chance, and he's on Canidae now

My Rascalbaby did that as well when he was a youngster. Seems now that he's almost 1 I think he just may have outgrown it. I really, really hope so! I remember asking that VERY question about 1 month after I brought Rascalbaby home! Good luck!
