Hello everyone!
So we've had Mr. Bubba now for about a month and a half now. We all love him. He's a total ham. He's had a couple of bumps along the way. Snapping at our little shihtzu "Baby" over food. Hubby has worked with him now for 2 weeks with only 1 snapping. He got him back in check. He has "Baby" eat first. Bubba has to sit and wait. We've had really good results. With our huge Boxer/Lab "Viva" was not so good. Bubba fought with her over food. Viva is about 100 lbs over Bubbas 55lbs and he nipped her on the neck. Now we put away her dish and as long as we are not playing with them all at once they are good. They play well outside the two of them for short periods. :)

Our biggest problem has been Bubba's barking....not his every other day of non-stop bark at the squirrel next door, bark at the dog down the street, bark at the birdies...bark at a leaf falling to the grass..u get the picture. LOL. We also know when he wants to play..he will bark at us..because he's bored. He loves to run and fetch. The problem is when he starts rough housing with the kiddos a bit much. He's a real big boy at 7months. He loves the kiddos but doesnt realize they are quite small. He knocks them down and doesnt realize it because it's all play time to him. When I tell him to stop, and to settle down. He starts barking at me. Then he barks louder, and louder AND louder. Hubby and thought we have shown we are Alpha. I have to take him out of the room sometimes b/c my son is only 6 and small and cant get him off. Then Bubba keeps on till I tell him no, and to stop it. I have tried treats as a reward for getting him to sit and behave. He'll sit for the treat and even high five, but he will go back to the barking. He barks so aggressively it makes me wonder if he's only playing or not. Its much louder than when he usually plays. Like he's snapping back for being scolded! He scratched my son on the side of the face with his paw a few weeks back. We've had his nails trimmed since then. He licks my son and has never bit any of them. My son wouldnt go near him for days and Bubba was heartbroken. He'd lay with head down near him. They made up, but he's so silly. I never leave them alone. But he starts barking and jumping in the air...and he gets very very riled up. I cant tell if he's playing or not. We adopted him at 7 months, so we have no prior history as far as discipline, training, etc.

Everything else is good. He's potty trained. He cant be left alone..mass destruction! lol. Loves to go for rides and walks. But the weather has been quite nasty.
Any help, or suggestions would be welcome!

Part of it is the age. I have been taking Rocky (7 months) to the dog park every day when I get off and one day I didn't feel like it. When I sat down in my recliner I got a tongue lashing like you would not believe. Raising my voice just makes things worse and he will always get the last word. To know if it is aggression you would need to describe his body language. Is he leaning down in the front (very common during play) what else do you notice about his posture (ears, tail, neck hair) I would guess it is play but without seeing it I am not sure

Hi! YES! That's it...I feel like I'm the one getting scolded at ! lol. Raising my voice makes him worse. He does lean down in the front. He'll jump at me..but wont bite. Then he runs off...skids across..turns around to see if I'm following..then charge back at me..but his ears are the same...he doesnt have neck hair raised or curled mouth. I took him for a ride to pick up my soon to be 16yr old daughter. He let EVERYONE in the parking know he was here to pick up Miss Gianna! lol. He didnt bark at the teen girls though! ha! He'd look at each one before deciding if that was his "kid" he was picking up! He barked ALL afternoon. EVEN after hubby took him out with the kids to play soccer. I tried not raising my voice today and it worked better. He's just so big already. He's gained weight already from when we got him. He was underfed. My mom's dog is huge too but she never "scolded" us with barking. lol.

Right now he's laying down like a log while my 9yr old daughter reads to him and my hubby. He listens to her alot. He plays "roadkill" when she tells him to settle down...he'll lay on his side...tongue hanging out...eyes "volkswagon bugged out"...it works for him. :)

Thanks so much... I must say owning this boxer is work..like having an additional TEENAGER in my home!! Angie :)

Well right now you have 2 teenagers and yes what you are descibing is play. I try to ingore it but cannot help laughing at times. If I turn my back on him while he is doing it, he will nip me in the butt. The sit command seems to work better than anything else when he is like this. BTW... he will always get the last word.

It's just like kids, they will talk back. If they get a reaction or the result they want, they will use it every time. Best thing is to ignore it....turn your head or even walk away. My Buster will stop as soon as I cover my eyes with my hands. I guess he can't see my face, so he thinks I went away.

Once they learn that the behavior gets them no reward, they will stop. Be forewarned though, boxer's are very smart and will use all their tricks in the arsenal! Be ready to fight many of these battles until they are out of ammo, energy and the will to fight! LMAO

I've been ignoring it and it has helped alot. He does that with my mom sometimes and it makes her a bit nervous. She lives in the home behind ours. And Bubba loves her but he's so big already that when he does it she thinks he's serious.

I bought him his first Kong fetch ball yesterday...it was like the gates of Heavan opened up and it rolled down straight to him...the way he picked it up ! Rofl! He was THAT happy! Kept him quite entertained! He is smart indeed. When he goes out to play in our backyard..when he gets bored..he'll bark right at the girls bedroom window so they can let him back in! lol.

We are hoping to take him to obedience classes at the end of the month. We spoke to a trainer at one of the Petcos. He trains only 5 dogs per class. He said he likes to try doggie backpacks often on boxers when training that they seem to enjoy carrying owners items. He said they dont use the "no" method but there was a lady there that was quite pleased. She has a lab mix and has gone a few weeks with great results. Of course she doesnt own Mr. Bubba..so that may not be so easy..lol. But I remain hopeful!

Thanks ! Angie
