Bruiser is being neutered Friday!!!! (Long)

Well Friday is the big day for Bruise, I'm trying to prepare myself and I'm a little worried about him being put under as this is his first time. I have already discussed with my vet NOT to use ACE, there is a note in his file in big red letters stating this and when I called to make his appt they asked me without saying anything about it, "no ACE...right?" So that has been established. I know this is a very common surgery but I'm not sure what to expect after he comes home and how on earth do I keep him calm so he does not rip his stitches out( I'm assuming he will have them) Anyone that could help put my mind at ease I would appreciate some feedback, and also how has this changed your little men afterm the operation, I have heard they will calm down but how much???? I love who he is and don't want it to affect his personality so much that he isn't the same boxer he was before. Also DH is very upset that I'm having this done because he feels it takes away from his manhood.... and that he will look silly without the attatchment. I have tried explaining the pros to being neutered but he is so stubborn he thinks I am being cruel to Bruiser by having this done. Anyway....hope to hear from you

You are not being cruel for sure. For your husband:

Neutering your male dog will help in the following ways:

Reduce risk of prostate cancer and prostatitis
Reduce risk of hormone-related diseases, such as perianal adenoma
Eliminate risk of testicular cancer
Remove sexual urge therefore less roaming behaviors (and less chance of getting hit by a car, getting into fights with other animals, etc.)
Reduce certain types of aggression

It helps to increase the longevity of your dogs life and being as prone to cancer as our boxers are, this a step in the right direction. Bruiser will be just as cute without the "attachments" as was with them. And his personality won't change...something your husband will soon find out. However, this is a subject we females will never truely know about and I can understand your husband's personal closeness to the subject
As far as keeping him calm after surgery, I'm sure you will find a way. The only suggestion I have is if he gets a too rambunctious in the house, put a leash on him, and put a leash on him when you take him out to pee to try and keep him from running around. I know you are worried but I'm sure everything will fine

Well, personally, I like the look of no "accessories" hanging there. . They aren't exactly pretty things to look at. Anyway, good luck with the surgery, and I'm so glad to see another responsible pet owner do the right thing. Not only will you be helping your dog with the health issues previously mentioned, but you will most certainly not be contributing to the overpopulation of animals in this country. Just one slip up and sweet Bruiser will be off making little ones that no one has the time or money to look after.

Believe me, your husband will not miss worrying about Bruiser acting like a crazy dog to get out of your yard and track down a female in heat a mile away. It's not nice having to leave your home at 10:00 PM and drive around the neighborhood, worrying to death about your dog, because one day he freaks out and jumps the fence. In tact males can go crazy during this time. It is so embarassing having a dog full of hormones not being able to control himself at times, if you know what I mean. Humping is one issue that can possibly be eliminated with neutering.

Anyway, it's a win-win situation for you and Bruiser. I don't know why men have such a hard time with the decision. Don't worry, your husband will come around.

Just want to wish Bruiser all the best for his neuter on Friday and a speedy recovery. Just tell your DH the only thing that will change about him after surgery is his VOICE :eek: Sorry...had to throw a little joke in there...My Nikita will be getting spayed soon (worried too).

I am sure he will be fine and its the best thing to do for him. I am taking my Bruiser to get nuetered next month and I worry too, that's one of the reason I put it off. I am going to be able to stay home with him Friday and Monday.
I hope all goes well and he has an easy recovery.

Don't worry too much about your DH.... I think it bothers guys because they empathize with their boy dogs, to a degree My DH agreed that we needed to neuter Hurricane, and he still kinda felt bad about it.

As for the keeping calm, good luck! The leash idea is the best one, keep one handy! We always have to take our boy out on a leash because we live in apartments, and don't have a fenced yard. The first day he came home he was a little groggy from the pain shot they gave him, but by day two you wouldn't have guessed anything had happened. The hardest thing was keeping him dry... he had dissolvable stitches and we couldn't let him get wet for two weeks, and Hurricane LOVES water

It hasn't changed him at all that I have noticed. Still hyper boxer pup, but we got him fixed at 6 months to the day, and so we did not have any of the marking, wandering, etc issues with him that young.

I am sure Bruiser will be fine, and enjoy all the cuddles and kisses you give him when he gets home from his big day!

We just had Cooper neutered a few months ago and he did just fine. He stayed over night on the day of surgery. We brought him home in the morning and off he tried to go in the yard. I did have to get him on a leash and also he had to get a cone. The hardest part was trying to keep the cone on him. It was very flimsy and he was able to rub up on things and it would fall apart. Other then the cone problem he did very well. He never did calm down, I think that may be an old wives tale. Good luck.

Good luck yo your boy-he will do fine. You need to keep them quiet for ten days or so-that is the hardest part Lots of good kongs and leash walks. As for his personality I doubt you will much difference. Only thing that quieted my boy down was age-certainly not his nueter. Frazier sympathizes with your hubby though

That is so funny because my DH is EXACTLY the same. In fact, he went as far as to inquire about prosthetic testicals. I asked my vet jokingly about them, thinking NOBODY does this, and he said he had just done a set! I about passed out! I don't think we need to go that route though, I can't imagine them missing them that much.
