Brinks found a small milky way bar and ate it!

Hi! We have been incredibly careful about chocolate and other toxic foods to dogs, but somehow Brinks (5 mos) found one of those tiny individual bite Milky Way bars. I found him licking the wrapper, so I'm assuming there was chocolate in it and he got that, too. I'm trying not to panic, since it was a small amount, but I don't want to under react, too. He had a major bout of energy about 15 minutes after I think he ate it, then settled down to nap. I called the vet, and the tech didn't seem concerned at all. My kids are in tears bc they think he could die. Should I be doing anything else, or do you think it was a small enough amount? Milky ways are only coated in chocolate, aren't they? He weighs about 35 lbs. now. Advice anyone? Thanks!

I'm certainly not an expert, but I would think he should be fine if he only had that small amount. Also, Milky Ways are made with milk chocolate, which isn't as harmful as dark or baker's chocolate. I would just keep an eye on him and watch for any changes in behavior.

If you are really concerned about him you can induce vomitting by giving him a little bit of peroxide. He will get all of that chocolate up and he will feel better and so will you. I had to do it last Christmas after my boys decided to go and open the door to the guest room and find the chocolate my parents had given me for christmas. Good luck, I'm sure everything will be ok.

He will be fine. It would have just been a tiny amount of chocolate and it is milk chocolate so no real harm. It takes a lot of chocolate and the baker's chocolate is the most dangerous. The vet tech was not concerned because it was such a small amount. I know of people who buy their dogs chocolate for special occassions. I myself stick with carob.

Last year, I had hidden the kids leftover Halloween candy away so they wouldn't be after it all the time. I planned to throw it away when the older kids were at school. It was in Ziploc bags sealed, wrapped in another plastic grocery bag with a knot, and then in a shoebox under my bed. Mackensie somehow got it out and ate a bunch of candy!! She ate lipops, sticks included, gum, and chocolate bars. I couldn't even guess how much she actually ate... I called the vet who said not to freak out and just to keep an eye on her. He only wanted to see her if she started acting strange. He says if it would have been sugar-free candy he would be more worried as nutra sweet and aspartame can be deadly. Well, she pooped wrappers and lipop sticks for a couple of days, but everything seemed to be fine. I would think a little candy bar wouldn't do any damage to your pup. But, a call to your vet should reassure you.

Rocco once ate a box of chocolates that was wrapped up under the Christmas tree. We called the vet who didn't seem to worried either. He told us to feed him a few slices of bread and that would help absorb some of the chocolate. He ended up throwing up most of it anyway. The small amount Brinks ate won't hurt him at all.

Thank you all for the reassurance. Brinks' is totally fine, thank goodness. His stool was a little runny that night, but that's it! Boy, I am learning that when he's quiet for a second, it doesn't mean he's sleeping ! Thanks!
