There are people in my house that have bad allergies including myself, but I love boxers and love my puppy. I saw a scale from 1 to 10 on shedding for a boxer and I believe a boxer was a 5. I just didn't want to add to the allergy problems I'm having and I figured one that's low shedding would help. I did read that most allergies are due to dander and saliva, which the poodle was one of the best for shedding and dander, but controlling the saliva seemed to depend on how much the dog barks.
We were considering a Maltese at one time, but the temperament seems to be a little too snappy for what we were looking for. So the preference would be a dog that’s good with allergies.
The second reason we wanted something smaller is that we like to give the dogs plenty of room to run around and I feel having one boxer at my house is not bad, but having two boxers I start to feel guilty that it’s not enough room for two boxers to run around in the house or back yard. So I figured a small companion would be great for my puppy to have, since we work and I feel guilty about leaving my puppy alone for so long. I think it has a little bit of separation anxiety and I’m hoping a playmate will help that. Even though I’m going to probably crate train the new puppy until it can be trusted around the house as well.
To be honest, I think poodles are kind of ugly dogs, even though we’re thinking about getting one. I know temperament and how well it gets along with children and the family is more important, but my wife has to think it’s a cute dog and she seems to like miniature poodles. I’d like a boxer terrier as they remind me of a miniature boxer, but she feels I got the boxer and now she gets to pick the second dog. So I guess I’m just trying to help her make a decision.
So far I think we’re thinking about a white miniature poodle and hopefully barking won’t be a problem. My wife grew up with a poodle that she loved, so it’s a little bit of an easy sale for her.
Here’s the list I’ve been looking at and maybe a hybrid dog won’t be bad. She likes the Malti-Poo, but everything I keep reading about a malteese has me worried about their barking that never stops. My parents have a spitz dog that just don’t stop barking and it’s the second one they have had, which seems like a common problem with this breed. They ended up disconnecting the doorbell, because they couldn’t take it anymore. I’d prefer not to suffer from a yapper. I want one that warns me, but not one that’s so annoying.
