I am ashamed to be of german decent. So the Germans are banning dogs and people can attack owners of dogs that are higher than your knee? I guess they forgot the important roll Boxers played in wars and police. This narrow-minded bull sh*t makes me so made. I would love to go the German and give the Goverment a piece of my mind!!! Next they will banned horses that kick and lamas that spit and cats that scratch. Lets but everything that we don't like away and everything will be alright. I hate that way of thinking.

The German Govt. should be banning those people who breed these dogs, not the dogs!!! There is no reason why the dogs should suffer because of these irresponsible people.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.....I won't say too much about this except that I am caught between two places here and to not take everything you read litterally without hearing BOTH sides. I am 100% German, and a 100% dog lover. So are Germans...let's not forget that they are the ones that created our beloved Boxer. I did discuss this subject with my German family (They live around Cologne). The reason they are having so many difficulties with aggressiveness is that, since the wall came down and they now host many foreign nationalities including Turks, etc, poverty has struck MANY parts of Germany. They are housing all immigrants and providing food and shelter for them, but are being overloaded with people seeking a better "oppurtunity" in life. Now, keeping that in mind, you have to realize that Germany is very small...it actually fits into TX 3½ times, yet hosts MANY more people. So, as a means to provide "entertainment" and "income"....the jobless and poverty stricken imigrants have brought in these pit bulls and started these "Games". Now, with a country so overloaded with imigrants and aggressive dogs, they are trying to put their peoples minds at ease and instead have caused widespread panic. This is a VERY sad issue for BOTH the poor and the large breed dog lovers. It seems like a lose lose situation...true...you can not blame a dog for it's trained aggressiveness, BUT in turn, can you blame the Germans for banning dogs that HAVE, on numerous times, attacked and killed children, adults, livestock, and other animals?
It seems a very difficult subject, but this too, I'm sure, will be resolved in a better fashion given time and research. Let's hope they find a reasonable solution soon, before anyone else gets hurt or any other breed is "banned".

From your post, it seems that all the troubles there come from the immigrants... Things are not that simple. Many extremist neo nazi groups use agressive pit bulls and those people don't really look like "jobless and poverty stricken imigrants" to borrow your sentence.
I agree with you about the fact it is a sad issue for dog lovers and I too hope they find a reasonable solution soon.

However, Jennifer, I have say thank you for bringing to light the fact that there are two sides to a story. The web site given encourages the boycotting of german import goods. I would like to point out that this action will not impact the government as much as its people. Please investigate further before taking measures. THANKS

Oh, C'mon on Olly...I never stated that ALL of Germany's problems came from imigrants...heck, I'm an imigrant myself...I merely stated that these impacted Germany, as many local German TV stations, radio programs, and newspaper articles have stated. I just wanted to point out that there are many reasons for this "outbreak" of aggressive dogs, and Germany has always had it's Neo Nazis, but they've not had such a problem with dog fighting as now. Neo Nazis, mostly , demonstrated, vandelized, etc...the dog fighting seems to have become a new trend, just as it has slowly creeped up here in the US.
Anyhow, I'm not going to overkill this subject, but there's my two cents worth. To Kirsten....I completely aggree with you!!! Let's hope the US AND GERMANY find a better solution for these aggressive fighting dogs.

I may be opening myself up to some harsh criticism but here goes......
I bet that some would change their minds or opinions if one of their children were attacked or killed by a Pit Bull. I HAVE reasearched the whole Pit Bull topic with vets and other animal specialists and have reached the conclusion that after many, many years of horrible breeding practices by many and by many of the gs being bred for aggression, the breed as a whole is dangerous, or at least has a great propensity for being dangerous.

I for one would feel much better knowing that there would be less of a chance of a Pit Bull attacking one of my children; or me for that matter. Sad for the breed that people made it what it is today but there is a point where people DO have to come first. Jennifer is right about the reasons for the ban. I have relatives from and in Germany and have heard the same things about Pits from them.

Years ago my parents had a Pit, they got it as a puppy and raised it just as they had our other family dog. As he grew (and yes, he was "fixed") he became aggressive with my parents and siblings who were still living at home. He also became VERY aggressive towards our older dog. My parents overlooked the fact that he ate THREE couches and a chair but the aggressiveness got to be WAY too much. One day Mom came home and found Bud (the Pit) had our older dog on his back and his teeth were locked around the old dogs throat. Mom tried to pull Bud off and he growled at her. Mom tried knocking him away with the broo and finally with a chair. WHen he let go of Schlitz, he went for Mom. SHe managed to get herself and Schlitz into another room. When Bud calmed down, Mom was able to get his leash on and he never returned...doggy heaven. No way was Mom going to risk that dog attacking anyone else or any other animal I'll bet if you talked face to face with my mom about this, you would see the fear in her eyes all these years later- and she's not afraid of much!

Okay - let the proverbial fur fly.....that's just my humble opinion!

Chris,
what a horrible story! How absolutely sad! I saw a story on TV yesterday about some cops that found a pit puppy in a garbage back , stuffed in a fridge, at someones house. The puppy had suffered numerous lacirations and had been used as blood "bait" to give the adult pits a taste of blood. Isn't that sick?! I've met a lot of seemingly "nice" pits, but I will NEVER trust one, same goes for Chows. I love dogs, but those are two breeds I will NEVER trust.
