Breaking the windows!

Our dog, Sir Rocky, will be 2 years in June. This is our first experience raising a boxer from a puppy, and it has been trying at times, but with a lot of love and patience we are making it through. We couldn't ask for a better companion. We do have one large problem. He loves looking out the windows. Looking is fine, no problem there. He actually thinks he is a cat (we have three) and lays on the arm of the couch (he's about 80 pounds) and watches the neighbors across the street.

Our problem is, he get's so excited when the kids are outside, or one of us come's home, he jumps up to look out the window and hits the glass with those big feet. We call them WMDs! In the past year or so he has broken 4 windows. Thank goodness he has only been hurt once. We do correct him when he jumps but sometimes we just don't get to him fast enough. Yesterday, I stepped outside to talk to my sister in-law for a few minutes in the driveway (she won't come in because he gets too excited and won't leave her alone) and that's when pane #4 was broken.

Does anyone else have this problem? Aside from putting bars on the windows we don't know what else to to. HELP PLEASE!!!

My last boxer broke a window with her HEAD! She was used to a window looking out onto the porch being open with a screen in it so that she could poke her head out several inches, and when the weather got colder, glass was closed, and the paperboy came onto the front porch ... WHAM! One time was enough to cure her, though. Our current puppy (8 months) started jumping against the sliding door when she wanted in or out ... I filled an empty Windex bottle with water, kept it right next to the door, and everytime I caught her with her feet up I spritzed her and said OFF. Seems to be working so far.

Well, the bars across the windows, or similar, is not a bad idea. It would be awful if he cut an artery :( This may not look pretty, but at least he, and your windows, will be safe from harm.

My Boxers like to rest their front paws on our windows, but we have industrial glass. Maybe you could replace the glass with something like this?

Ha ha. That last post was too funny. Get industrial glass so your boxer doesn't break through it. Imagine telling the window installers that one!!! Ha ha ha....

My buddy loves looking out the window too. He never goes to crazy unless someone is out there with a BALL and god forbid if he can't have it. He's pushed the screen out a couple times but never the window. My bud only weighs 60 lbs though and he's been slamming up against the window less as he gets older... 2 1/2 now!

We actually have industrial glass as our windows and sliding doors and non-standard and were classified as industrial - even though it is a home ;)

It was just an added bonus that it can withstand the Boxers. If we ever move / build again, we will get industrial glass, even if we have normal windows :)

My grandma's late boxer once got soo excited to see her return home she jumped right thru her picture window. She cut an artery in her leg and lost alot of blood, but thankfully the vet was able to save her. This experience pretty much ended Pug's jumping days. I did go thru many many screen doors with my late boxer Maddie. She would just go right thru them, lol.

I have a similiar problem. My little girl jumps against the glass whenever she wants in or out. We are afraid she is going to hurt herself someday. Right now she is still small so getting through the glass hasn't happened yet. Does anyone else have suggestions besides the water spraying? We tried that and our little girl decided it was a great time to play with the water. She loves to play with the water hose so the spraying is fun for her. I am worried she is going to hurt herself sometime. I appreciate any help.
Thanks,
Laura:confused:

How about installing shutters that are louvered? That way he can still look out but wouldn't be able to break through the wood to get through the window. Or even drapes that you can keep closed. If he can't see out, he won't be tempted to jump through the window. Or just close off that part of the house to him. At least that way he'd be safe and you'd be saving lots of money. LOL.

I have that problem too. They are very protective of their home and let people know they are there. What I have done (because I am in an apartment) is put baby gates in front of the windows when I'm not there. Also when I am there I leave baby gates up in the rooms I am not working in. I normally just lay them in front. This helps me.

Ikaika broke a window once there at the apartment. Kids from upstairs were taunting him and he didn't like it. He didn't get hurt, but he still tried. So baby gate went up around the apartment.

My 1 1/2 yr old busted a window out just this winter (one of the coldest days we had!)

The water meter reader was outside our dining room windows (they are long windows - floor to ceiling) and Toby went berserk! Racing around the dining room table and barking like a mad man then jumped against the window and POW! went the window. Liked to give the poor meter reader a heart attack! Luckily Toby wasn't hurt, but it definately let in some nice refreshing 13 degree air in the house , BRRRRRR!!

Any ways, until we can get new windows this spring (smaller ones that aren't at his level) we put plywood across the bottom half of the windows to keep him from doing this again! (Definately not a permant or pretty solution but for now it is working)
