Ok, this may be a stupid question but here it goes. We want to adopt another dog. My question is that we already have a neutered male boxer, 1 year old. Does that automatically mean we need to get a female boxer or can we get another neutered male boxer?

I love him so much I wish I could just ask Otto what would make him happy!:D

Any input would be greatly appreciated!

Conventional wisdom says boy-girl usually works best. You do not have to worry as much about sexually related dominance issues.

I have heard that the next best combo is male/male and then female/female.

Amaya thinks that Otto would like a sister. Brutus certianly loves his little sister :)

We decided to get another male boxer when Kelly was 18mths old. I was a bit concerned about the dominance thing but we have always had male dogs so was not that keen on getting a female. Anyway, Dexter is now 9 mths old and Kelly is 2 years old and they still get on like a house on fire ! They adore each other.

They have both been de-sexed and we are careful to enforce the pack order so they know their place. Kelly is also a very easy going dog and not at all aggro. We are expecting Dexter to make a challenge for Kelly's position soon but there is no sign of it yet so we will see what happens. Maybe it never will !

We have had several male dogs (2 at a time, but only ever one boxer at a time previously) and never had any problems at all as they both knew who was boss.

I would say alot depends on the personality of Otto. How is he around other male dogs ?. If he is pushy and dominant then you would be better with a bitch. However, if he is more submissive then another male should be no problem if you choose carefully and make sure they know you are the boss.

We got a famale boxer when our neutered male was a little over a year old. They get along great. We also have a 2 yr old bulldog and she is the dominant one, then comes Daphne, and at the bottom of the totem pole is Cleatus. no matter what the sex is, youll find (hopefully) that they will get along great and will be best friends! Let us know what you decide!!:)

We have a boy-girl combo. Roxy is only two weeks older, but I love it this way. They are so close. I'm not saying that two male couldn't be close. I think it adds a nice balance to things with the m-f combo. I also don't see why a male-male combo wouldn't work especially if it was a puppy that you got.

I have a little girl and a baby boy! They are 5 months apart. (11 months today!partyicon and Chase is 6 months! They are the best of buds. Jazz is very hyper and aggressive. Chase my little boy is very mellow and goes with the flow. So, I think that combo of their personalities is what makes them get along great-not neccesarily their sex. ;)

Hi Cheryl,
If you are still thinking about rescue (I saw one of your other posts) give the good people at Boxer Rebound a call. They will probably direct you to an opposite sex adoption, but regardless, they will walk you through the process step by step, and make sure Otto and the new dog are a good match before letting you take him/her home. We got our Breezy from BR and she's a joy!

Good luck in your search for the new family member!
Wish I were going with you for number 2!

I would recommend you to get a female, then you have almost a zero risk of dog fights. Dogs of the same sex may turn against each other due to the dominance issue. That doesn't automatilcally mean that you will have problems with two male dogs, but it's much more likely to happen than with a male-female combination. I have heard it before many times that after a peaceful living together for a few years, dogs of the same sex start fighting and their owners don't know what they can do in this cituation.
Good luck in your search for a brother/sister for Otto :)

We just got our 2nd dog 2 months ago. Our first one was a male and so was our 2nd one. They are both a little over a year. We fixed them both at the same time just over a month ago. They are BEST FRIENDS. They get along so well! I was also concerened about getting a 2nd male, but everything worked out great. Good Luck to ya.

I have 2 Boys :)

I live in a guys house, there is 3 of us who are roomates and I own the house. There is also 2 more guys, the two dominators of the house, Joe and Max. If you don't have a lot of time to baby them and cuddle with them then its going to be hard to have 2 boys together, but if you let them rule your world then 2 boys can be great haha.

My guys love each other and have never fought although treats make them growl sometimes. Maximus is only a year and I think its great to have boys.

:) hope it helps.
