Boxer's tolerance to cold?

We are a Minnesota family who has raised 4 Boxers over a period of 30 years ... I must say it is possible to raise a Happy Boxer here in the North Country but you must be prepared to have him/her join your family in your warm cozy home , not only because of the weather but they must be kept within the family circle, to do otherwise would be to deny all the wonderful Boxer traits that lead us to want to own a Boxer in the first place...My advice is that unless you are able to keep him/her close to you , it would be better to look for a pup more adaptable to the cold weather . The Boxer looks like a big, strong, brave dog and he is but in many ways they are babies ..
Just love them and keep them warm and close and they will be your best friend for life.....

I have two wonderful Boxers, here in Milbank South Dakota, and when I am not at home they stay in the garage, it is heated of course, and I keep it around 53 to 65 degrees in there. They have a pet door that allows them to go to the outside kennel for their potty breaks. As for allergies, I have also heard that Boxers are hardly a bother to people with allergies. My niece has allergies to pets real bad and my babies do not bother her at all.
Good luck with your decision, If you get one and it doesn't work out, give me a call and I would gladly take it home with me.

Since Boxers are short-haired dogs and tend to keep themselves very clean, perhaps a Boxer would not affect your husband's allergies if it were in the house. Has he been around any other Boxers? How did he react when around them in terms of his allergies. And now, one would think, with all the allergy medications on the market, one could live with allergies and a pet with medications. Just seems a shame since both of you want a Boxer not to enjoy them as full family members. And to reiterate what has been expressed here, I don't believe a Boxer would withstand cold weather outside 24/7. I have trouble getting my Boxer outside in 50 degree weather to do her business. And when it is hot, forget about it. . . she ain't goin' nowhere!!

I would also like to say that my boxers love to go out in the snow and play. we play for 15 to 30 minutes. No, they don't like it when it gets below 15 to 20 degrees, but for the most part they love to have snowball fights with me. After that we go in and warm up. I have never had any problems with them even when the temps fall below zero and the wind blowing like it does here, they go out, do their duty, and come flying back in at 100 MPH.

Just wanted to add, that my 83 yr old Granmother is here visiting and she has horrible allergies BUT Lacie seems to have no effect on her. Maybe, you could find a family close to you that has boxers and let your hubby spend some time with them and see if they bother his allergies or not.

I think it's great that you're doing this research too---makes for a much better chance of future happiness for all concerned. When I was growing up we had a boxer. He loved to lay in front of the fireplace during the winter, but he also loved to go out & play in the snow with all us kids. He always came with us when we went sledding & he'd bark & go nuts when we'd go flying down the hills. And from his first winter with us he decided it was his "job" to pull my sister home on the sled....too cute. This was back in the late '50s & we didn't have leash laws....I'm just wondering here, but I think being out in the cold for a "little while" playing is different for them than having to be out there to go potty. And maybe dogs that are born & raised in northern climates can take it a little longer than our southern dogs, but definately NOT full time.
I've also heard about Boxers being less likely to cause allergy problems. I honestly think Sam gets hairballs from licking herself so much.
From reading your posts, I think you'll be a great mommy, whatever breed of dog you get. Good luck with your decision.

Here's a thought. Northwoods Boxer Club in Minnesota has a great rescue program. Perhaps you could contact them and volunteer to foster a rescue dog. Not only would you be helping out a needy boxer, but you would find out whether or not your SOs allergies can handle a boxer.
I grew up in N Michigan, and now live in Alaska...I can say without a doubt that boxers are not a breed I would recommend living outdoors, no matter where you're located but most especially in the frozen north.

If your husband can't live with the boxer in the house, then A boxer is not for your family - they NEED to be with you and they don't like extreme conditions. Casper even lays in front of the glass door in the sun when I have the air conditioner on here in Miami.
Good luck finding the right breed for you, I'm glad that your researching dogs now before getting one. Also what about a hypoallergenic dog? I know there are some, such as poodles, so the dog can be with your family more. Purina has a "breed selector" on their website http://www.purina.com and I know one of the questions they ask is if you need a dog that won't cause allergies, so maybe that will be a good place for you to visit.
