I had always believed Boxers to be German in origin. The research I did on the breed when I was looking to get one supported this. My brother has recently been saying that Boxers are actually French...just wondering if this is true...no real importance, I'm just curious (I like calling Iggy "my little German man", "my little Frenchman" just doesn't have the same ring.)

He's probably speaking of Alt's Flora, a brindle bitch who was imported to Germany from France in the late 1800s. Flora, when bred to a local Boxer of unknown name, started the foundation of the modern Boxer, as she is both three (dam's side) and four (sire's side) generations from Meta v.d. Passage (Flora - Schecken - Blanka - Meta; Flora - Flora II - Lord - Piccolo - Meta) However, the Boxer developed in Germany from the Bullenbeisser long before Flora was on the scene.

The Boxer Club of France accepts and uses the FCI standard, which clearly states the country of origin as Germany; I can't imagine they would do so if they felt the breed originated in France.

Yep, French boxers are born in France, German ones in Germany, US boxers in the States... And the list just goes on. LOL - boxers are a German breed, now bred in nearly 100 countries around the world 
Yes there are some people who think that boxers bred in North America are quite different from European ones. Those same people (generally) conveniently ignore the differences between boxers bred in different European countries, and boxers bred elsewhere in the world simply cease to exist or are somehow a subset of NA or Europe. LOL - can you tell it irritates me? I think it is rather ignorant.
With all that said, yes there are some minor differences in style. But that actually applies within countries as well as between countries. And the differences are generally pretty minor. Some breeders put more emphasis on elegance than on substance - but the boxer is supposed to have both More to the point, the differences between good boxers (meaning those that fit the breed standard well) in the various countries is negligible. The differences are far more apparent in the poor specimens.
